I'm seriously considering going O/O and have spent a lot of time gathering all the valuable wisdom and experiences from everyone here. I figured starting my own thread would make sense so I could have a single place to get answers.

I really need to know how much of a loan I'd be needing to ask for and the "actual numbers" (within reason) that I can expect to pay yearly and monthly. My insurance company won't give me a quote until I can tell them what kind of truck I'm going to buy and what kind of trailer (if any) I'm going to have insured by them. I've been looking at the pro's and con's of leasing onto a company and could use some advice in that realm too.

I've been looking at a few trucks in the truck paper and I figure I can probably get a pretty decent starter truck for about $25,000 and a used dry van for around $10k.

I looked at the "so you want to own..." thread and it doesn't give hard numbers that I need and the government websites are vague, so can anyone help me with these numbers? I'll be doing everything out of Indiana.

    DOT# & MC#
    UCRA
    INTERSTATE AUTHORITY
BOBTAIL, LIABILITY & CARGO INS. +ACCIDENTAL INJURY
IFTA (is $25 annually +mile tax really it?)
    PLATES
    HEAVY HIGHWAY USE TAX

I have 5 years experience making other people money and I really think I could make it on my own. I have contacts with a few shippers that I made friends with while working for other companies and can get freight but I really need some hard numbers to pitch to my skeptical wife.

:biggrin_25514: I appreciate all of your valuable input.

Is DOTauthority.com a good way to get authority or should I just do it myself?

This might sound petty, but for what it's worth:

We've received several harassing email messages from Jason Lamb, the owner of DOTauthority.com, and he has made multiple attempts to spam the forum and spam our forum members' email addresses. Based on those encounters, it's my personal opinion that you shouldn't do business with Jason Lamb and DOTauthority.com. I don't mind sharing the email messages, if anyone needs to verify.

You can do everything yourself except getting your BOC 3 Process Agents

You'll have to get a service for that....
    Just google BOC 3........

Also you deal with states like NM, KY, and OR on your own...
OR requires a $2000 bond....If you go through your insurance it will cost you about $200....And you'll have to file monthly.
NM uses EFile and you are no longer required to carry a hard copy of their Weight Distance permit...

    Success to you.....:biggrin_25525:

Thanks for all your answers. How does a driver who doesn't have employees implement a Alcohol & Drug Testing Program? As for the establishing of "preventative maintenance & inspection procedures" I assume that just means I need to keep records of vehicle inspections every 6 months, right?

Find a C/TPA (Drug/Alcohol Consortium Third Party Administrator...) google the term C/TPA

They will set you up to become compliant and remember depending on what state your IRPed like Cali for example....You may also need to take Supervisor's training (about 2 hours reading material and video; and then a 10 question test with 70% as a "passing grade") to be compliant with DOT Revision 49 CFR Part 40 Drug and Alcohol Program Here........

Your maintenance and inspection program requires an annual inspection performed by a certified mechanic and shop.
Some states like Cali require Monthly and Quarterly inspections in addition to the annual inspections....
The Monthly and Annual inspections may be performed by you the O/O, and can be performed concurrently......

Also remember that it takes about 3 weeks to get your authority in the mail. So, your truck/trailer is sitting in your driveway, not producing any revenue. FYI.
