Finally making the move

    Long story short.. I've worked as management in corporate America for the last 10 years of life over 18 years, and tired of the rat race. Aviation has died off and looking to get into trucking to further understand the transportation business. Is it really that bad to drive for a company for a year OTR to get local routes. I do live in the DFW metroplex. I would try to go to Raider which is 20 minutes from the house.

    Yellow is growing fast and started their own CDL school to train drivers and give them a job.
    Plenty of openings at the Irvin, TX terminal.
    Line Haul is the easiest which is leaving the Irvin terminal and going to another terminal somewhere, then switching trailers and returning to the Irvin terminal.

    I'd put Yellow as first choice; excellent benefits and a pension plan.
    Raider Express - you're already looking at.
    Millis Transfer - one to consider; their school is in Burleson, TX

    First off... being a truck driver is a lifestyle, not just a job or career. Very few of us work 9 to 5. We legally can drive 11 hours and work 14 hours. Companies expect you to be willing to work that. We also work all kinds of crazy schedules. So keep that in mind. Now, you asked is OTR that bad... Well, not necessarily. It's not good for you health wise. If you have a family, it can be very tough on everyone. I don't think going OTR is necessary in today's world tho. I would definitely exhaust every effort to find a home daily/ nightly gig.

    I made a similar switch and went with Millis, they've treated me well, so far.

    I've been a company man for 13 years in Aviation. I would like the most experience , that's why OTR for a year I can sacrifice the time. The wife and kids are behind me now, but we are working towards our goal and this can help a little faster.

    I will look for local routes since living in DFW. The hours are fine since I'm use to working long hours already. I know driving is different but travel alot with the family.

    Do all pay while training? Really don't want to drive for a mrga carrier and be on the hook for more debt..
