Cummins makes it really easy. 4 bolts on the side of the engine. Pull cover off.

Update. Rather than screw around trying to figure out how the IRS is broken, I will be setting up an LLC and getting an EIN for the LLC.

Will need to set up some more business-specific bank accounts for better financial segregation of money too.

It's something I should do to protect myself anyway, I suppose, but it will delay moving over to Schneider.

Having the accountants set it up, since they offer the service.

I just realized I did not yet mention how the IRS is broken.

Currently I cannot acquire an EIN through the IRS website. The error indicates that there is a data conflict of some sort. After a 90 minute wait on hold, I worked with a live IRS agent for 30 minutes to determine that she could not figure out what is broken.

My only option now for a personal EIN directly tied to me is doing an SS4 form via snail mail, which is likely to take months, because the easy solutions were already looked at by the agent I already talked to.

Schneider absolutely requires an EIN even for a sole proprietor, though it is not a legal requirement. My guess is that they do not want driver social security numbers to be floating around in too many places for security reasons.

It’s the right thing to do anyway. Less Crete hand holding and transition closer to being your own man so to speak.

I would try more to see what's wrong with getting a simple EIN. Took me about 2 hours to get one if I remember correctly. I'm surprised you didn't need one when leased on to Crete. Of course Schneider wants a EIN number. Your in business for yourself. Make no mistake, Schneider will distance you as far away from the company side as they can, and they should.

You are better off with your own EIN anyway. If you have to file your own Federal HVUT, you will need it as the IRS does not allow using SS numbers for that.

Bob did you already have a ein in your name ?
Either way with the magas your better off with a LLC because you never know what the leasing rules are gonna end up being….
