Hello
I‘m just wondering to buy another truck for flatbed,I’m currently driving new Cascadia,505 hp,auto shift. total weight is around 60k-80k,It is not so good on Mountain driving like WY,CA,MT,but I could say acceptable.
My mpg is 7.2-7.4 showing on the dash this trip.I have no idea it’s real or not….
Just wondering D13,what‘s your mpg ?what’s your feeling about climbing hills ?Thank you for your opinion!
Is D13 455hp enough for mountain?

Driving a 760, always heavy. Normally passing most folks when climbing.
Would challenge the fuel economy. When you pay IFTA, what's your quarterly mpg rate?
I average 6 mpg, don't care what dash shows. Again weight is normally near 40 tons, no speed restrictions, so 5 over limit my regular speed.
Personally, would purchase another Volvo when time comes. Hope to hold out for EV but doubtful an OTR version will be ready. -
Its all about expectations. 40 years ago a 425 horse Cat was king of the hill and it hauled 80k up and down those same roads. Even a 335 Cummins got the job done.
Savor the Flavor Thanks this. -
Not sure about D13, but my n14 with 435/1650 with 3.58 rears, pulls a bit better than my 500/1650 with 3.42 rears. However, now I went to 525/1850 and it's better.
I would say for mountains TQ and rear ends are more important than HP, so D13 with 455/1850 and good rears will be plentifulSocal Xpress Thanks this. -
D13 is weaker than DD15, especially when comparing 455hp to 505. DD holds speed better before it will start loosing momentum, so it’ll just hold set cc before getting to real mountains. Volvo D13 will be loosing speed on slight uphills even if not in the mountains! I would suggest the OP drive a D13 powered truck before getting one. I didn’t like the way it cannot hold set cc speed in moderate terrain like Ohio, where DD15 always would. Of course the axle ratios make difference too. I’d say DD15 shines with low gears like 3.36, even with automatic.
Volvo will use more fuel for sure! -
Plus the claim about Ohio terrain is also not accurate. I live in midwest, plus own a D13, there's absolutely zero issues in Ohio. Set CC at 75, pass everyone, no matter weight.
Anyhow, OP didn't ask for a comparison. Want owners of D13 to chime in on thoughts of ownership. -
With fuel economy let me just say with your 75 mph cruise it’s 5.6 for D13. No matter the weight no matter the gear ratio. -
Just get 400 hp with a 12 speed auto and a 2.xx rear gear…….
you’ll fit right in with the new way of doing things -
