I’ve read through every single post in the thread in the last two days, very informative! I’ve been doing food service for the last 16 years and I’m approaching my mid-40s and my body just can’t take it anymore. Walmart seems like an excellent choice for me. I do have some questions based on what I’ve read through this thread.

    1. During onboarding when doing the backing maneuver, I’ve seen it posted that you’re not allowed to lean out the window? Do I have that right? Can you only use your mirrors?

    2. when first hired and starting on the extra board, when do you get called in? Is it like you get a call at two in the afternoon saying you have to show up at 11 PM? How far in advance do you know what your days will be? Is it you work for a day and then go home if there’s nothing else for you?

    3. I have zero experience with bidding on runs. How does that work? Is a run a set schedule of stores and backhauls you do over the course of several days? Or is it just a dispatch time and day and they send you wherever?

    4. Related to the last question, how far in advance do you know where your next stop will be? For example, if you are doing a 5/2 schedule, do you know exactly where you will be going for those entire five days before you start? Or do you learn one day at a time while you’re on the road?

The closest DC to me is Tobyhanna, PA. I don’t mind slip seating, it’s what I do now. I’m familiar with Long Island and New Jersey so I have that going for me.

    1. It’s hard to remember, but I believe you couldn’t lean out the window, and had to have your seatbelt on.
    2. Extra board here at least my DC(Tobyhanna as well), you had a regular 5/2 schedule as an extra board driver...x-board just meant that you don’t have an assigned truck and will be shifting around trucks, sometimes multiple times in your 5 days.
    3. Set runs, called “exception runs”, are few and far between. You get to bid once a year and the bids are more for your schedule/program..the exception runs are snagged up by the senior drivers. When openings happen from resignations/retirements/new programs, they will be posted and you can sign up for them. They are awarded through seniority.
    4. You will more than likely never be more than 1-2 stops ahead, and sometimes you will do a run to a store and not have another move by the time you get there. There is no rhyme or reason to where you go and will change by the day/week. You may come in on this weeks shift out of Toby and end up in Maine, next week down in DE/VA and the following week back and forth to Toby/Pottsville all week on runs.

Have you seen the add for WM drivers at Pottsville PA grocery DC ? They're offering a twelve THOUSAND dollar sign on bonus though I don't know any details.
