Are you running much brokered freight or is it all customer freight?

This Baltimore to Black Mountain run sounds like a brokered load to me. I can probably guess who its going to in Black Mtn.

    Thanks for the updates.

Honestly, I couldn't tell you how much brokered loads we do. Hadn't been there long enough to really know. Hate to say it, but that is the truth.... and you know me.....

    Back home again -

Things are going great with LC. I am starting to fall into the groove and things have smoothed out nicely.

Now here comes the interesting and thrilling part of it. LC has decided to make me a trainer. "How 'bout that"? Actually, Magnum had promoted to Trainer Status right before I gave them my notice, and I guess LC decided to follow suit.

I know there are some of you out there that might scrutinize this (being that I have only had 11 1/2 months experience and a little over 100,000 miles under my belt), and so be it. But before you decide to jump all over me about "not having enough experience", let me save you some trouble and assure you that I am already aware of the fact that I don't "know it all" (but then again, who does?).

I can tell you that Magnum felt I was ready, LC feels I am ready, my trainer from Magnum thinks I am ready, other drivers who "personally" know me think I am ready, my instructors from school think I am ready, and I think I am ready. LC tested me to make sure I was up to the challenge, and I have had to "prove my spit". No one (myself or the company) is going at this without being totally sure.

One other thing that I want to say is that I realize that this is not a "social event", and that indeed it is, in its own sense, dangerous. Again, I am approaching this from a humble, intelligent standpoint, and I have spent a considerable amount of time on the phone and in person with Duke (my trainer from Magnum - who by the way is the "Best of the Best" (in case you didn't know)), picking his brain and getting every little piece of training knowledge he could offer. Plus he has made himself available should I need to call him.

Please understand that I am not puffing out my chest. I realize that there is going to be somewhat of a learning curve on my part. But I am confident that I can teach this guy how to do what will be required of him to be safe on the road, courteous to other drivers, and effective at his job. After all, that is what a trainer's role is, right? And frankly, I am stoked about the opportunity to share what I know with someone else.

I have been assigned my first trainee (who, by the way seems to be a really nice, down to earth guy) and he has actually been driving larger trucks (dump trucks and so forth) for about 20 years in the mountains. My primary objective is to teach him how to drive a Big Truck and learn to survive the lifestyle of an OTR driver. Of course the other objective is to teach him how to do the "company" end of things.

So wish me luck. From the looks of things, we roll Saturday. I'll keep ya'll posted.

    Big Scholastic ARF!

Scooter, I have to say congratulations Man! I'm sure you'll do well as a trainer. At the very least, give it a try for a while. If it works for you, great. If not, then that is fine as well. So if LC is doing trainers, does that mean they are hiring student drivers? I'm sure the question has been asked before, but I'm lazy tonight and don't wanna look back thru the pages.

    Good luck to you!

Well Thank you Dodge Ram. I am really looking forward to it and frankly, it is something that I have wanted to do for some time. I am honored to be considered for the position.

And the answer to your question is YES, LC will hire students fresh out of school. Give em a call. Not sure if you are in their hiring area, but it would be worth a shot.

    Good luck

Congrats Scooter!! I hope my new trainer at Werner (at the end of the year) is half as nice as you. From all the common sense I've seen you write over the past few months, I think you'll make a great trainer!

ps. I just graduated Johnston Community's NCTDT classes today and ranked third in the class!! ** At this point, Sam pats himself on shoulder **

Thats GREAT Sam.... Congratulations!!!!! And thanks for the kind words of encouragement.

JC has a phenomenal training program. One of the oldest and one of the best out there. And you ranked third? I'm patting you on the back as well. Ya done good!

Ought to be interesting getting out of here tomorrow morning. Snowing like a banshee right now. In fact I decided to drive up to the yard today being as I know Raleigh's and Greensboro's reputation for road clearing when the weather is this bad. Figured I would just spend the night in the truck and leave out tomorrow morning with the trainee. Last I heard they are calling for an upwards of 15 inches of snow overnight, possibly turning to freezing rain and sleet by the morning. So it should be interesting to say the least.

THe good part about it is that we are going to SC and then shooting across Atlanta then up through Nashville to KC. At least somewhere along the way we should break out of this mess (and I do mean MESS!)

    Talk to you soon

    Snowy ARF (brrrrrr)

Scooter; First off i am not a trucker but I like to read the forum posts. When you post I know I'm going to read a well written story that comes from your heart. I am retired now but I have spent my career in the aviation business. Believe me I know what makes a good trainer--common sense, ability to train without being a jerk, making sure they have fun while learning, and being professional. I sense all these traits in you just from your writings. If I was going into trucking I would want you to teach me. Good luck and keep us posted. REDWAVE:biggrin_25520:
