Buying a truck out-of-state

    Hey all,

    I'm hoping to pick some experienced minds here! I'm located in PA and in the process of buying my first truck, which is located in TN. Loan has been approved through my bank and the truck in question is being sold directly by the trucking company that has owned it from new, not by a dealer - so for them it really isn't 'their problem' or anything that they have to know anything about.

    My research is telling me that in order to pick it up and bring it back, I need liability insurance (probably planning on using OOIDA unless anybody has any other recommendations worth checking) and a temporary tag - this is where I am getting tripped up. Looking on Tennessee's DMV website I'm not seeing anyway to get a temporary tag for a semi-truck (the only temp tag option relates to dealers), ditto PA. I figure it must be doable but how?

    Bought mine private party in Spring City, TN Dec.'17

    Walked into the local DMV, showed em the bill of sale, & title. Said I was going to be using it to pull a camper, as an RV basically. :rolleyes: Lady gave me a 30day paper tag for $21 bucks, & I rolled home 717 miles to FL to get it legal & been working it ever since..

    I did the same thing when I bought mine from Missouri. You just have to find the nearest DMV. They should be able to square or circle you away :D:D

    Guessing you did not scale on way home? Any issues blowing by them in your "camper"?

    You’ve done a rigdig report, and had it on a dyno for a report ?

    And had the dealership print out all
    The work that was done under warranty ?

    And had a competent mechanic inspect the truck ?

    driving it back home is the easy part.
    Just get ready to spend $15-20 grand replacing all The emission components.
    Which may or may not be available . See the threads about not being able to find normal parts like water pumps and brake shoes etc

    Thank you for the replies. I guess a trip to the nearest DMV it is! Might give them a call ahead of time to sound them out. I could have made this easier :rolleyes:
    Still, the truck seems to be exactly what I am after so hopefully worth the messing about.

    OOIDA do a 5-day temporary insurance so that will cover that side of things.

    Good to know... I think I'll do that insurance too.. Keeps us posted here how it went for you..

    Lol, heck no. Truck was governed to 70mph so I just kept her pegged in the hammer or center lane whenever we came up on a coop. Basically was I75 south the whole way..

    FL had me more concerned than TN, or GA but was dark by the time we crossed in.. Both southbounds & the AG station were open per usual..

    Right wrong or indifferent, my girlfriend & dog came along, & a logbook didn't exist in the truck at the moment. My theory was if that's the story I'm going with, go all or nothing..
