cdub304,
when you run under your cousin authority, how does that work?
you pay for the use of his authority? I assume you pay for your own insurance?
how are you paid?
sorry cannot help with IL companies. i guess you don't want to relocate.
I'll eventually relocate and will look for a place that allow's me to get incoming and outgoing loads. In other words, let's say i move to Atlanta.Start my pickup in Atlanta drop off in Houston, pickup somewhere near Houston and take load to Atlanta. I simply do this over and over. I am looking for two cities that has lots of incoming and outgoing cargo. Once I find that, I will relocate. This may not help you, but are ideas to throw out there. You were saying you get alot of outgoing loads from IL but no incoming loads. There got to be some consistent incoming loads coming from somewhere. It may be just a matter of research.
me being in Miami is like being a black hole. once you are in, you cannot get out.
just curious
So you want to "own " your own company

Reasy,
It's really just a matter of paperwork running under my cousin authority. Just getting the truck listed under the DOT #, taking a drug test, and providing him with copies of logs and service/pretrip inspection sheets and putting the stupid company name on my truck. Nothing major just a matter of paperwork.
As for insurance while the companies we haul for use his DOT covered insurance I have my own on my tractor, just use his for cargo and trailer.
He doesn't charge me anything unless he has a bill due and booked some garbage loads for the week.....um I hate to charge you, but um.....um....I need to pay this I need to pay that........LOL.
I get paid off the load. Most companies give you partial once loaded then I just wait on the rest cause they try to rob you when you want the rest at the drop. So far I have been fortunate and have not had any problems with the pay, but working with family im sure that its on its way.
Looks like I might just rent me a refer from one of my buddies and start my own operation..........Im still sleeping on that one though.
As for the loads out of Illinois most of them orginate out of Chi, Wi, or In. There are loads going back to North. Maybe I was not clear with that in my post, but they don't even cover fuel. I was just fishing to see if anyone knew of a good company or operation in IL that actually left room for a guy to make a living you know? -
My husband gave up his authority, to lease on to a company. I said I wouldn't sign the lease. I hadn't been in trucking in 30 years, and I was over-ruled. My husband is learning that I know how trucking should operate. The contractor relations guy told me "Why are you complaining, you are making money." Yeah, barely.

Hey All
I am thinking about buying a truck and contracting out to one of the bigger OTR carriers.
My question: Will I make substantially more than a company driver after all is said and done? I know that truck payment plays a part in this among other things, that aside, is the pay/profit margin that much different? Is it profitable being an O/O with risk involved compared to that of just a company driver? Please take into account, I will not be leasing a truck through a company, but purchasing on my own.
Reason, I pose this question is that over the years, I hear O/O's claiming that they may make $100.00 per week more than the company driver after expenses. I cannot dispute the claim, one way or another, as I have never taken the plunge. Any advice?
I thank you all for your response in advance.
God bless,

am i wrong for not really worrying about the money aspect? it seems like everyone that asks about being an owner operator is only concerned about comparing them to company drivers pay check.. if i made $8 more then a company drive and all my bills were paid i could care less.. as long as i'm free.. wont have everyone and there mama telling me what to do, where to go, how to run.. i think the freedom would be good enough for me..

if one chooses to get into a lease deal don't think they won't still be pulling the strings they will -
well why would you want to walk away from a job/business?? life as i've known it has been nothin but work, atleast 70% of it anywaze..usually the only reason you'd walk away from a job is because you dislike it. if it's your business, what is there not to dislike.. and i got the gist of the whole lease thing.. doesn't really seem worth it to me.
