Tesla Semi electric truck is finally about to go into production
OK. Driver sits in the middle. IDK, I've only been driving a truck less than 2 years, but isn't this gonna be difficult to back into a dock? I mean, rolling down the window and cranking my head outside so I can watch my trailer is just common sense. The view in the mirrors crates distance distortions and can lead to easily hit stuff. At least that's the way I see this.
However, I do guess that if the techniques to back this end up actually working, you could just as easily (or with the same amount of difficulty), do blind side backing. Your visions access is going to be as good (or bad) on either side.
I see a glitch here!

I believe they have cameras instead of mirrors. I see that working out real well for them.
Flat Earth Trucker, RockinChair and homeskillet Thank this. -
That photo might be an early prototype used for endurance testing, might have simply been loaded once and driven around for months on end.

The thing backs it’s self up……
AModelCat, flood, okiedokie and 1 other person Thank this. -
Backing up with a camera causes more wrecks than not using a camera. The theory smith came up with, and I tend to agree, is that one gets tunnel vision. Paying 100% to the camera and not where the tractor is going.Rollr4872, Doealex, Team818 and 1 other person Thank this. -
What happens in the snow and ice with cameras? Not easy to clean off quickly, or even look through the clear areas like with mirrors.
What happens if/when the electronics go wonky and you have no mirrors?
Totally blind. And not just in backing, either. Making turns, changing lanes...
And that is made even worse if the drivers seat is in the middle.
My sisters car has a backup camera.
Nice, but I still think it is better to turn my head around to actually look.
That camera only shows what is right in back of you, nothing with oncoming traffic from the sides.
Relying on that is an accident waiting to happen. -
I think tesla and designer folks like them are counting on these trucks to back themselves in. Drive themselves. They will have to have a driver/watcher position for awhile as there are going to be a few disasters/crashes before its all driverless, if ever. I hope never. All electric. Yet no big charging stations. Whatever. This country has enough problems without trying to completely change our energy sector.
