Ya but the Midwest ones are usually pretty small. Those big east coast buggers are almost lobster size, you try to slap one and it'll slap you back.

Don't know about the East Coast ones but the West Coast ones are definitely bigger than what I see here in Kansas.

They eat hundreds of mosquitoes a day each. Anything that eats mosquitoes is my freind.

Thinking i might get one for a pet. He can follow me around while im tarping so i dont have to carry my can of brake cleaner around and spray it in the air like a crazy person

Used to carry around brake cleans for these rat finks. They bite, and grow to be the size of your thumb.
Cool fact 1 sex has the white dot, the other doesn't. If you place 2 with the dots in a cup, they rip each apart until they die.
@AModelCat has more then likely heard these coming too. Spruce beetles.

Silly question but if they bite, why are there two of them crawling on what I assume is your hand?

Picture from the net. If that was me they would have been about triple the size and 10 times thinner. They only bite when they are stuck, under your hard hat or in the collar of your coveralls.
If you notice the 2 by the thumb, 2 white dots and they are fighting.

They get big out here in a good wet year, 2 years ago we had more dragonflies in South Dakota than I'd ever seen before, also had about 3 years rain in 6 months.
