Years ago when there was a TA in Charlotte I was sitting having some coffee listening to a driver talk about how his brakes failed coming down from Virginia and was on the CB warning people to get clear of the NC scale. I asked him why did you go through the scale? He told me well I did not want to get a ticket for failure to stop. Another guy then asked him what would you have done if the scale master stopped you? He said well the scale was actually closed but I did not want to take a chance! This guy was wearing a stinky Simon ball cap on backward. I laughed for hours at that nimrod!

While I'm on the subject of Stinky Simon, does anybody remember this? LINK

The State of California has sued Salt Lake City-based Dick Simon Trucking Inc. to pay for damage done by a company driver who drove his big rig into the state Capitol in January.

Dick Simon Trucking driver Mike Bowers, who had a history of legal and mental problems, rammed his vehicle into the Capitol's south portico. The truck, carrying a load of canned milk, caught fire, killing Bowers and leaving the building with fire, smoke and water damage. Repairs are still being made.

According to the suit, the company was aware of Bowers' emotional problems and hired him anyway. It seeks $13.5 million in actual damages and $100 million in punitive damages from Dick Simon Trucking, a subsidiary of Simon Transportation Services Inc.

Simon officials have not made any comments about the lawsuit.

The one time I’ll never forget, was at the Atlanta Petro in 2009. Lot of Trucks sitting. I was stuck for the weekend. After mentioning a retired millionaire I’d met running a Dodge Dually expediting for CXS. He was for real. Soon one Driver mentioned he bought stock in Exxon right after the Valdese oil spill. Another had stock in Viagra, after the initial offering, when it was being re evaluated. Both were millionaires that just liked Trucking. Neither seemed to be able to afford a shower. Add the Bedbugger that reads one book per day, while driving. Runs 3000-4000 a week. Then rides his Harley 1000 miles, soon as he gets home. And the kid bragging about his $58k custom Harley. I commented $58k?!! He replied No $5800, Duhh!!! No respect. As usual, I was the lowest paid Truckdriver there. Always am.

Theres not enough popcorn for the stories I've heard from the Gospel Trucker lunch counter ..... if a truckers lips are moving, he's probably lying or half-truthful....

A old chicken hauler was bragging about always being overweight and if the scales were open he would stop on ramp go outside and bang a metal bar on the side . Enough would start flying around he would be legal . He was a hellishly funny guy so you would listen to his tales.

You have to have starched, white sheets on your bunk if you get on the interstate because it's a "national defense highway". If we are invaded all truck drivers will be required to bring supplies to the front and use their bunk to bring wounded back.

    Or

"It's FMCSA regulation that you have to unload me within 2 hours or I can pull out and keep the rest of the freight "

My personal favorite is other driver's from my company saying "I'm in an old team truck and they forgot to turn down the governor". Then you ask the model year and mileage and the truck and it turns out to be 3 years old with only 350K. Or it's a glider or a kw that teams are never assigned to.

The one that really made me scratch my head back in younger and more naive days was the bit about how it’s illegal to charge you a toll AND THEN have you cross a scale.

The white sheet myth dates back to when my grandpa was trucking (WWII Navy vet). I wonder if there was some obscure state regulation at one point, and it began being passed about as gospel. Or if a driver came on a wreck, had white sheets, used them as bandages, and the myth took off. There are so many antiquated regs we don't know about, or removed from the rules prior to the information age, who knows how it got started.

BTW, does anybody remember when Martha Stewart white sale at K-Mart used to coincide with MLK day? Was there some hidden message to buying white sheets during that holiday?

I actually had signs on my truck.
    FIRE EMERGENCY
    DO NOT DETAIN

    And that's the truth....
