    Actually no it's not.
The team expects endorsements as it makes the person more visible, thus sells more team merch and more seats at the stadium at no cost to the team.

Let's see. Is the owner of the team paying them? No. Is Nike paying them? Yes. Side job. The owner has them do NBA or team promos, PR events...etc. Do they benefit from the player's popularity? Of course.

Part of Aaron Roger's contract with the Packers is a rider with the Bergstum Automotive Group. Whomever is the Packers coach is also a spokesman for Cellcom. Yauch's deal with Associated Bank is contingent on his playing for the Brewers. Steve Kerr came to my friend's Bar Mitzvah under his contract with the Bulls. A lot of these deals are obtained with the help of or thru the team.

And what about mandatory press events? They're out of uniform, and not playing - should they be allowed to introduce topics that reporters don't ask?

Sports has always moved the social agenda. From the competitive pedestrians to the modern day. Just look at how countries use the Olympics.

What I've noticed is that the appropriateness of a pop culture figure (sports music etc) speaking about politics is dependent upon the viewpoint expressed. Charlie Daniel's can be invited on Fox News and express his opinions with no consequences, but the Dixie Chicks get - literally- burned in effigy. Tim Tebow was 'persecuted for his beliefs ' but Kaepernick is a song of a _____.

"Club" press events have typically not had political questions asked. They are also there representing the team. Not themselves. So no. They shouldn't push any protests. They can answer questions directed by the press.

It's the attitude and the overall message they bring.

If Kaepernick had said he was kneeling to protest the injustice of racial profiling, that he was taking a knee not in disrespect to the flag or nation, but in regards to draw attention to the fact that in a country in which all men are equal, some are still treated as though they are not.

He could have said he respects the American Flag, because of the ideals it represents, and his taking a knee is because those ideals are not being represented fully yet, so he is showing his regret and despair because the Flag is actually being disrespected by some who we entrust to protect our society.

Would he have taken some criticism? I believe he would have. I also believe that the vast majority of people would have listened to him. He would then have a platform, been able to present evidence to the public of what he was protesting against, and brought people together for positive change.

But that's not what he said. He said the entire nation was racist, and the Flag stood for oppression. Then came the pig incident, calling all cops racist pigs. He was divisive, using his position to agitate, rather than to unite and bring light to a very real problem. That's why many of us rejected him.

Think about how you respond to people in everyday life. What is your reaction to someone who comes at you with a bad attitude? What if they were calling you a racist and a bigot, and had never met you before?

That's how many of us see these things. We don't elevate professional athletes or entertainers, giving special credence to anything they say. They're just people, and we react to them the same way we react to anyone else.

That's exactly what he did say. It's the media that fried him over it.
He wanted a way to respectfully show he didn't agree with the way the country is heading while still respecting the flag and the armed forces. He was advised by retired Army green beret Nate Boyer to kneel to reflect that.

Kinda seems that way... in his own words...

Now let's see if anyone can point out the problems with his explanations, and why he took so much criticism. It may help to find a transcript.

I'm not trying to say who is right, or justified , or anything else. I'm just pointing out that politics has been interwoven into sports for a long time and that as long as the political message is palatable, the audience doesn't care. It's when the political message challenges the status quo, or runs contrary to deep seated beliefs that "shut up and play" gets trotted out. Everyone remembers Jane Fonda going to N Vietnam, but how many remember what Elvis and Nixon talked about in the Oval Office?

Too often the right to petition for redress is only tolerated when it does not offend or impact.

    PoleCrusher and ZVar Thank this.
