Hi. A few weeks ago I finally made the decision to start trucking school. Oddly, the day after orientation my wife caught COVID and we ended up quarantined for 2 weeks. The school worked with me and I've been in class since. Spent several hours in the yard learning pre-trip and driving techniques, backing, etc.
I'm in the Harrisburg, PA area and the instructors are telling me to go out and start talking to hiring managers before I have my CDL. That seems odd and so far I've gotten mostly rejection. Everyone seems to want drivers with 1 - 2 years experience. I'm not complaining. It seems to me that good opportunities come at the right time for the right reason and pushing my way around never worked well in the past. So I'm ok being patient while learning more about this new career.
I'm on here now as my instructors mentioned that Truckers Report is a good place for information and hearing what other drivers think about the current industry.

Lots of great drivers on this forum that will help you.
Will your wife ride with you?RoadandRock Thanks this. -
To be honest I don't know what I don't know. After reviewing many adds on Indeed, I realized that many companies are not providing details about the actual type of work they need. They have benefits and qualifications, but 401k, 1 year (preferred), Class A CDL leaves me wondering. If I had to take a stab at it, dry bulk tanker for feed mills seems interesting, or perhaps flatbed.
Chinatown Thanks this. -

Submit online applications before any phone calls.
You can start submitting applications now; don't wait until you graduate.
You'll get job offers contingent upon graduating from cdl school and having any required endorsements.
Get all the endorsements, including hazmat. A hazmat load can be paint or fingernail polish or cases of car engine oil, like you buy in Walmart, etc.RoadandRock Thanks this. -
XPO Logistics is hiring in Harrisburg.
I know the ads say 6 mos. experience required, but sometimes they do hire a driver right out of school.
Several drivers on this website have been hired by XPO Logistics as new cdl school grads. -

Is White Oak Mills the one you mentioned; feed hauling?

If so, put in an application anyway. Many companies have some flexibility as to experience required.
To apply online, submit a completed Employment Inquiry to HR, www.whiteoakmills.com.
