I have no idea, I've never set foot into one. I don't drink coffee. LOL

Perhaps it's because their suckers and paying $6 for a cup of coffee isn't enough so they feel the need to give more?

Perhaps it's because it's set up like a bar atmosphere? (At least that's what I've been told)

I go in the mini-mart, slap down my $1 for my diet coke then leave. No tip.

Okay I admit, I tipped the young man at toys-r-us for carrying the train table to the car. That thing weighed a freaking ton and I didn't want to have to lift it. He was sweet, he did it for me and he was already clocked out so I slipped him a few dollars and he was thrilled and I felt like a big deal.

However........he was off duty and did me a favor I feel that's entirely different than the schmo at subways

That reminds me of a conversation with a young girl at a Bonanza Restaurant in Houston in 1982:

ME: I want onion rings with that.
SHE: I have french fries. (pointing to the "fry basket")
ME: I know, but you don't have any onion rings (pointing to the "fry basket")
SHE: I'll have to cook onion rings special just for you.
    ME: Aren't I special
SHE: Here are your onion rings, don't you think I deserve a "tip"?
    ME: A "TIP"???? For what?
SHE: Because I cooked the onion rings just for you.
ME: You really want a "tip"?
    SHE: Yes.
ME: Ok, here is your tip; grow-up and get a real job.

I SWEAR! The conversation was something just like that.

I absolutely believe you. She's probably still working there.

Okay I got a pm asking me why I tip my hair stylist. Here's why: She comes in on her day OFF to do my hair when I get a 34 hr reset and call with no notice. She'll stay late, come in early for me. She does my hair exactly like I want, spends a great deal of time coloring it, highlighting it, cutting it. I have very thick hair and she never once complains about my over abundance of hair like other stylists do. She NEVER gives me an old lady hair cut AND she remembers everything about me. I also happen to know all the details of her life and she's a lovely, smart, hard working young woman who moved home to help out her mom during an illness. She's so sweet she told me I tip her to much. I told her "do not ever say that to someone LOL".

But the main reason is she will do anything in order to get me in when I need it.

Nothing chaps me worse than someone asking for a tip. Especially when they think they have done me a favor....instead of just doing their J.O.B.

On the flip side of this. I have always over tipped my barber/stylist. And she has always came in and opened her salon for me, on her day off.

Unless she had something planned with her kids. Then we just put it off for the next time I come in, usually the next week...on her day off.

Real service, deserves a real tip :D

The lady that cuts mine. Charges $10.

Being a former hairdresser in Birmingham who charged up to $30 for a mans cut...my wife would beat the ### out of me if I just gave the girl $10.

My wife can do it when she's home. But she's often as tired as I am. We both use the same girl.
