Walcott Radio

Lol that surface mount stuff is too tedious for me. I don't have the eyesight, manual dexterity or patience for that kind of work any longer. Maybe 30 years ago........

 

A few yrs back i was sittin in iowa 80 across the road from walcott...2 guys bought radios and had them alm tuned up and so on..
I could easily hear them doin radio checks with one another and setting echo n such...Funny thing was..I was on 19 listening and the were a wack of ch above....
Would i let wallcott "tune" a radio,only if it played music..
I found that unless your spending they have to much attitude/####yness,they do have a good stock though and thats the only reason i like them..
Better off to some degree is to watch,listen,read,experiment...

 

I don't think I would buy the cheap truck stop swr meters, like workman. It seems like when it comes to meters, the "get what you paid for" comes into play. The older meters are far better quality. To me the $20-30 truck stop meters aren't that great. As much money you have in your new radio and antennas, i wouldn't skimp on the meter. Also, make sure the meter you buy is an swr/power meter, not just for swr. Later you'll be glad you spent the extra money. Plus make sure the meter can handle the output power of the radio. Eventually you'll be like the rest of us and have too many meters, too many radios, too many..... Well not really too many.

 

I think that the op should consider an analyzer if he wants to learn more abojt his system..
The rig expert aa35 zoom if he wants to just stay in the cb range but seeing he has the stryker 955 go up a scale and get the aa55zoom..
The antenna side is so important that i feel its worth the extra expence..

 

Can you ever have too many real radios I use a Astatic Meter there not as good as they used to be I need to start looking for Dosy Meters then figure out how to run new CB Coax thru my Pete 389 Mirror then with my Francis Antenna’s I should be good until I can get some Monkey Made Antenna’s I am running a Connex 3300 right now when I can I want to upgrade to a galaxy big rig series and/or probably and a ranger
RCI63FFD4 then I can use my 3300 as a back up I’m a radio nut LOL

 

Why a heavy air cooled one piece big antenna unless your running BIG watts..Mind you im no fan of the francis ant either..
Never seen them in person but the al capone seems to be a nice antenna for big power....
I personally favor the skip shooter or the 10k..Atleast the 10k can be rebuildable as where the mm are not..

Why the inline meter?
If your buying a ranger later on i would invest in an analyzer cause they do by far more that a stand alone meter while learning so much more....When finished tuning(cause there is more to antennas than jjst swr)just install coax into radio...Your not potientially hurting a radio with constantly key up while adjusting..All you need to do then is use radios meter as a reference..
