OK. I thought the 8/2 or 7/3 splits were, basically discrete units of time. In other words, if you did at least 2 hours of off duty time but less than 3 hours, you had to take an 8 hour sleeper berth stretch to complete the split. But, it's actually a bit more interesting and versatile.
In a nutshell, for a split:
1. You have to take at least 2 hours off duty (or Sleeper Berth or a consecutive combination) for one half of the split
2. The second half of the split has to be at least 7 hours of consecutive Sleeper Berth.
3. And, the combination has to equal at least 10 hours. (doesn't matter if the off duty break is before or after the longer Sleeper berth break)
I thought is was that if you took, say 2 1/2 hours of off duty, you'd still have to follow it up with a full 8 hour sleeper berth, since you didn't complete a full 3 hours making you eligible for a 7 hour instead. But, that ain't it. If you take 2 1/2 hour off duty, you then only need to follow it up with a 7 1/2 hour sleeper berth stretch. The total of the 2 is 10 hours or more. So, any break over 2 hours, but less than 3, doesn't need a full 8 hour sleeper berth stretch, just enough of a stretch so that the 2 equal 10 hours or more.
Everyone else may have already figured that out, but it was news to me. My ELD kept doing what I thought were screwy things with the hours split, somI decided to look into it and learned something. Just thought I'd pass it on. I may not be the only one who didn't correctly understand it!!
Sleeper Berth Split, important detail I just learned.

Uh oh..... Another "Split Sleeper Berth made simple" post. The last one has gone on for 7 or 8 pages....... and did nothing but confuse the #### out of me...... and I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND the rules. I will not be back to this post, otherwise I will need to buy a roll of Duct Tape and wrap up my head completely, so it doesn't explode and scatter brain matter all over the entire interior of my clean and pristine truck!! Lol

But the 7 or more must be line 2. So if your stretching your day with an early nap, you need to do the sleeper, even if you're going on vacation for an extended period. The long period in the sleeper first makes staying in the truck to finish the break unnecessary.

And you need a sleeper to use.

I gave up trying to figure that ridiculous sleeper berth rule a long time ago. I drive until I get tired of it, get some sleep, drive some more. Easy Peasy.
