The late man who made that shaft once told me: 'A lathe is the only machine that can make another lathe". He was retired, had a 5,000 sq ft metal building, a ton flatbed and bought/sold, re furbished machine tools. A desk in one corner by the walk in door and an old but solid recliner he did business from was the office.
His first question usually was, what does a new one cost. I'd say ?$, but no longer available. He replies I'll make it for one half ?$. Deal...
Go by and he has a piece in the lathe. Working on your shaft, had to get a piece to make it from. Lathe is spinning, we have said this and another subject comes up... He abruptly stops, holds up a hand, walks over to the lathe and just feels the spinning shaft with thumb and forefinger. Nods, walks back and resumes talk where he stopped. Depending on how long you stayed, he might get out a caliper and measure. The shaft was threaded one end w/hole for cotter, tapered larger with key way for drive gear, flattened to a bearing surface, keyway for driving vanes , smaller flat dimension for other end bearing.
Not an easy copy, but a life saver. Had bought the machine at salvage price, and seller had vane kit before he knew the shaft broken and no go. So shaft, free vane kit, assembled, sold and was still running 3 yrs later when the building burned.

Probably a #4. I won't sleep in a truck. Don't care if its a 700 mile day, I'm in my own bed when I get home, whatever time that is, unless something big breaks. No ELD, ag exempt, can run 16 hour days if needed.

If I'm stuck I will get dragged out and keep moving. Personal best (?) was 5x in one day, but it was a tough day to be out there.

Not sure how much longer I can keep up with the physical part of this tanker job when I'm not driving. I'll know more about that in about 5 months.

This rain you speak of: Is it somewhat similar to the clear cleansing liquid that falls from the sky, making roadways hazardous when in quantity, and wind driven, colloquially known as "tain" to some itinerant truck travelers?
