I have a c15 mxs that was taken to 17:1:1 compression and single turbo by previous owner who did the work. I’ve been doing trips from Denver to Kansas City and I noticed that when I get to KC my oil is at proper level. Upon arriving back in Denver it needs close to a gallon to get back to right level! The trip back to Denver is 10k heavier but still not more than 35k. It will pull a hill no problem, but it starts to feel like it’s working too hard or something, seems like a vibration/noise is the only reason and explanation I can give as to why I feel like it’s working too hard, almost like it’s lugging but I’m up at 15-1600 rpm. Is there any less expensive options I have to find out what’s going on in the engine? Oil samples have come back good but idk if me having to add so much oil in between PM would hide the true readings?

first thing i would do is pull the exhaust down pipe off the turbo and check for ant oil residue, then pull the boot and pipe off the turbo discharge leadig to the turbo cooler and check for oil residue. rule out turbo seals. With that much oil loss, and if going in coolant, your coolant should look trashed. so check your coolant. First things first. Next you gonna have to pull the exhaust manifold and check valve stems for oil.

On second thought, I wonder if I could do this stuff myself…. I’m mechanically inclined, have standard tools, is this something I could tackle on my own? Any tips or special stuff I need to know to get it done and not mess stuff up further?

You most certainly can. Go on eBay and purchase the cat c15 Mxs parts cd. Gives the breakdown on everything you are working on and gives part numbers so you can order what you need on internet before work. Manifold gaskets and bolts and etc.
