Looks like i might not be able to get to California to get my physical done or mail it to them in time ( they want it mailed 30 days before it expires). So if it expires , i know they suspend CDL but can i just get a DOT physical done and then they reinstate it? Or would they make me do CDL tests over again? Is there a grace period. Anyone in California delt with this before?

Do you have to get it done in California?

You can get it done on the very last day before it expires. Get it done(wherever you go) and “WALK IT IN THE DMV OFFICE YOURSELF DIRECTLY” near the closest office. They will put in the there DMV system on the spot. That’s it, nothing to it. And, make sure you get a receipt from them that they entered it, also keep a copy of the DOT physical with you.
    Been there, done that.

I don’t think there is any requirement that the physical has to be in the same state your DL is issued by.

just get it done anywhere , I get mine done at the minute clinic at CVS pharmacy . the doc , or more accurately the nurse practitioner, will enter it into the fed system and then you fax or email or snail mail a copy to the states DMV

I use all three methods so there is almost zero chance they won’t receive it .

I fax it , scan it and email it and snail mail a physical copy.

I have emailed a couple times and then had issues where they said they didn’t get it .

Even if your physical expires (and your CDL is downgraded) it will be re-instated as soon as you renew the physical, up to a year. Hand deliver it to DMV office.

I was told immediately. NO grace period for reinstatement.

I emailed mine. 3 months after it was issued. 6 months after the last one expired. The fed extended and reextended the deadline. I don't know if there's any other extensions.

You can't walk in. Need an appointment.
    Things might be different now.

I know I submitted it online but I don't remember the process. Take a look at www.dmv.ca.gov

You can’t submit online. At least not the DOT Medical. They physically have to look at it with the Doctor’s signature. If you wait till the last few days before it expires, I would walk it in to a local office near you. Commiefornia are taking walk in’s now.

Actually I did do it online I scanned it to them and received an email confirmation. I literally just Google it and it gave me the DMV site to submit it

Times must of changed then. Where I had taken my physical, they told me clearly, not to mail it(the old physical was about to expire the following day), to walk it in. I just took another physical a month ago and I still walk it in. Gives me a piece of mind. Thanks for the update on how they work. I’ll be visiting the local office again(DMV) at the end of the year for registration and I’m going to ask this same question about scanning. But I do believe different states have there own procedures.
