Hi, need help,
just purchased a 2016 Prostar with an N13, truck was parked in heated garage test drove it and all was good, bought it and drove it home (4hrs) ran fine all the way, parked outside, the next day tried to start it (near freezing temp) and it would start right away but would not run, idled rough and died after 10 secs, cycled glow plugs a few times but no success, plugged in the block heater and re-tried the next day, started, ran rough for a while and then cleared up and ran smooth, when trying to accelerate engine would studder and heavy white smoke (raw fuel), took it for a drive still heavilly smoking, eventually cleared up on hwy after @ 10 min, next day tried starting again plugged in same outside temps, engine starts right up, starts missfiring and same thing again, studering on acceleration and heavy raw fuel smoke, tia

I would start by verifying the air inlet heater is working. Then connecting to the ecm with diagnostic software, and look at all the temp sensors after sitting overnight. One of them could have failed "in range" causing the ecm to supply an incorrect amount of fuel for the actual conditions. Aside from that, you'll have to start troubleshooting with the basics. But since it clears up when warm, I'd be leaning towards air inlet heater or a sensor issue.

Thanks Ross, I realized last night that the previous owner had told me he purchased fuel 2-3 months ago so I'm thinking it might cause a problem being summer fuel so this morning I pumped out the fuel and put in fresh fuel, took it for a drive and it seemed ok. I will try it again tomorrow, the light for the inlet heater does come on and flash after a while, but I haven't tested the actual heater.
Ross_Tech Thanks this. -
