    Do you use those cleaning pads on the wire? They clip onto the wire before the wire feeder... it makes a big difference. Or maybe the wire is rusty, it don't take much to foul up a new liner.

    No pads on it. Even trying a brand new liner I managed to get a 4" long bead down before it piled up again.

    Hopefully my J-man stops in tomorrow and can get it figured out. Sucks being the green apprentice again lol.

    Funny thing is its only this one wire that's giving issues. The regular fluxcore wire we use works just fine. This hard face wire is soft as ####. Wonder if its just too soft to push through 15 feet of liner? Literally everything past the feed rollers is brand new.

    Checked the feed rollers, they're proper. Tension on the rollers is good. Feeds fine. Once the tip goes back in it seems that's where the trouble starts. Tip is new, proper size. Even tried a bigger tip for ####s n giggles. Didn't seem to make much difference.

    1976, that’s me standing against the back of the cab, uncle Lester standing by the fender. Lot of my family members were self employed water well drillers.

    This Rig was a Bucyrus Erie 22W with a 4 cylinder BUDA engine.

    Seen a lot of forked sticks used, seen a lot of dry holes too. Uncle Lester would always make the Witcher mark the spot by driving something in the ground. Then make the land owner watch and agree that the bit was centered over the mark before removing the marker.

    Each morning the Rig was checked and leveled before drilling to insure the straightest hole possible. Although we hit water many times, it wasn’t enough to wash your hands.

    Always found in this neck of the woods, after drilling sandstone and getting into blue shale or gray shale always produced the most water. As an old gas driller and core driller, uncle Lester used the lay of the land to locate a spot to drill.

    Years ago before all the modern drill rigs of today, the gas well drillers used a lot of cable tool rigs, and water was the enemy when down deep… ( floats the tools ) …. that’s why you see 100 year old gas wells close the top of the mountain in this area…..

    I was 19 in this picture. Running a 22W in Columbus, Ohio. That’s Roger the owner of R&L standing on top the casing holding the cable.

    Holding the cable while drilling gives you a birds eye view of what the bit is doing as figure of speech. Everything you need to know about what’s going on at the bottom of the hole is detected by what you feel in the cable…. bit sticking, bit turning, tools floating, rock trying to fall out of the side of the hole, can all be detected by feel. Roger was transmitting to me what the bit needed since I couldn’t reach the cable, and we were drilling sand. Drilling sand with a cable tool rig is different world lol….!!
