I live in Pennsylvania. I have been getting every year a Pennsylvania state inspection on my tractor and a Pennsylvania state inspection on my trailer. The Pennsylvania inspection from what I understand meets or supersedes the federal regulations. I only travel in the neighboring states so thus far I have not had a problem.

But a thought just came to me. If I get my tractor inspected with a Pennsylvania inspection sticker can't I just put a federal sticker on my trailer without having to get a Pennsylvania state inspection sticker? As the carrier I'm allowed to put my own Federal sticker on but I'm not sure about the state inspection part of that for the trailer.

If you meet the qualifications you can do your own annual on both the tractor and trailer, that will satisfy the FMCSA. Has nothing to do with PA's inspection, though PA's qualifies as an annual.

    You c
You can do your own DOT inspection, I do mine every year. However you don't need a DOT inspection if your home state requires an annual inspection. Fyi, it clearly states that in the regulation. But be warned, some DOT inspectors don't know what they are doing. For example, a friend of mine lives in Pennsylvania as well and had his tractor and trailer inspected in PA. He was stopped in NY on 87 and was written a warning for not having an annual FMCSA inspection. So I would have an FMCSA inspection sticker on your equipment if I were you.

New Yuck's is another one of those commies states that doesn't recognize much of anything from other states. If you're based in NY, you better have a current NY inspection on your NY plated tractor&trailer. Also, NY will cite you for registering your NY based trailer in ME. Also, NY doesn't recognize ANY other state pistol permit. Yup, NY sucks..

This is how I understand it, if your vehicle or trailer is registered in PA, it has to have a PA inspection done by a certified inspection station. The fmcsa inspection is not the same thing and the PA inspection is accepted by other states as the same as an fmcsa inspection sticker

Sorry I'm late to the party. Risgeline answered tour question correctly, although the PA state safety inspection is equivalent to the Federal annual for FMCSA compliance purposes, if your truck and/or trailer has a Pennsylvania registration plate on it then it also requires a PA safety inspection sticker from a state registered shop and inspector.

Leased onto a guy based in Texas moons ago. Had to have a state of Texas inspection done before anything even started.
