I don't care how much power you have. Simple math works out so many RPM thrugh such n such an overdrive ration through such n such a rear end rati, through a certain size tire. It's going to limit you to your Rpm.

anyone have an rpm calculator handy?? what overdrive ratio and tire size Tater?? Its easy enough to run the numbers to find out what the rm at 117 is. And I highly doubt it will be within the range of a detroit.

Now the old time long legged trucks are a different story but to be honest the motors of those times rarely had the power to push those long legs to such high speeds. Sure there was the KTTA's and the bigger 3408's but those motors were pretty rare.

 

Don't forget the venerable 1693 T/A...

 

well just roughly since I don't know what trans but seeing as it's a columbia I'm assuming a ten speed so I used that overdrive ratio.

with low pro 22.5's your looking at 3046 RPM

with Tall 24.5's your looking at 2815 RPM

either way, isn't happening with a detroit.

now if you had the same double over 18 that 550 has then your looking at 2316RPM, which is doable but that trans isn't available behind a detroit as far as I know. i've never seen it, that's for sure. Regardless you still need the power to push that vehicle to 117 which is much harder then most people think.

 

A 13 speed double overdrive, the old 9 to the dash model, has a .60 overdrive.

This transmission with 3.55 rears, 11R24.5 tall rubber, 3.55 rears, calculates out to 140 MPH at 2300 rpm.

my dad had one in his first truck. 72 pete 352. we swaped the gear to make it a double over. ran like a scalded dog on the flats but that poor 903 started crying when you were still 5 miles away from a mountain. nothing like pulling Mt Eagle at 20mph... lmfao

 

I had a hopped up VT903 once. It would turn 3300 rpm, had 4.44 rears, 13 spd od, and ran 11X20 tires on the rear. I bought it that way. That sucker would flat run, but had the juice to pull. What made it funny is that it was in a first generation Road Commander. I once ran back from Chicago with a hopped up Pete with a Cat, After a while he quit trying to get away from me.

I wish I had taken picture of that truck, but I din't have it too long.

Mine looked a lot like this one, almost the same colors, execpt it was striped up like the second generation Commode, about like the middle truck in the second picture.

Notice the 53.9 price on the fuel pump.

A friend of mine had a first generation Road Commode and every now and then he'd talk me into running a trip for him...It was never a good trip.

 

That was the days of trucking. Mom and pop truck stops everywhere. Pull into a gas station and get a tire repaired. Mostly everyone nice to you. What happened?
