Will I have to change the shim of the cam followers, for the 160 CPL? Do I need to remove a cam follower to see what gaskets are there now?

The timing is less important than the aftercooler and piston change.

If you want to do it properly then yes you will want to retime to the spec of a higher HP engine.

The aftercooler install is not hard, you just need the accompanying water lines and crossover tube to work with the cooler, I would recommend that if you plan on changing timing and compression you are going to want to add the cooler as it will help keep the low idle smoke down.

Well, I’ve been in touch with Pittsburgh Power and told them my CPL and that I’m wanting the engine hotter but I don’t want to change the timing. The Cummins guru(big and small cam guy) there says, lower compression pistons, different injectors and turbo. He called this build in a small cam a, “ 350 Magnum”. Said he’s seen plenty of these builds go to 425hp safely. Waiting for a price quote.

No such thing as a 350 magnum, there was a 400 magnum small cam that was released as a recon crate engine, it was essentially a BC3 parts built on a SC block.

That isn't really relative to the engine you have as you are not changing all those parts and specifically the thing that set those apart was the timing, it was timed completely different than any of the small cams before it.

They want you to spend money and they do not care if the setup is reliable as they have no issue going back on their word, but if going that route you might as well stop asking questions here as not many have the same ideas about building a reliable engine which is the goal of many of us instead of selling parts for a profit.

When you get to the Junk yard look for a cam key/way that's half-way off set to one side and must be put in facing the correct way or it will run like a 220 hp. Motor not a 350hp?

Well I ain’t bought nothing yet and more than likely they’ll be to expensive. I initially called them to ask what CPL would interchange, without changing the timing(same as 0217). His answer was, “well I can’t sell parts if I give all the answers over the phone.” I’m not necessarily going that route but I am investigating.

CPL 0248 was suggested to me and that there was no need for a step key. It used 215420 pistons, along with pump and injectors for 0248. Swap the turbos and add AC if desired. This was a topic on the 0217 CPL from an ATHS forum.

When looking through the CPL book, the only difference I see between 0160 and 0248, is the injectors. On the other hand, 0248 also says, “this CPL was never made”.

Keys change depending on CPL and cam, using the same key on two different part number cams can have much different results on the final timing.
