This is like trying to nail Jello!
The topic of this discussion was brake fade and it's relationship with temperature. You keep bringing in new irrevelant arguments. You, yourself, just said either braking method is fine. The point is that going down a hill as fast as possible, using both Jake and brakes, is asking for trouble.
But to address your question about downgrade with chains, it raises the question of if you've ever run chains. Because you would know if you had that chains give you fairly impressive traction. Enough so that you can normally run your Jake because you'll be coming down at a lower speed with your chains on to avoid chain damage from overspeed.
My brakes are smoking when on steep grades.

I'm well aware of the reasons in favor of stab braking. Most of y'all probably don't remember, but the initial versions of the CDL manuals recommended steady braking, much to the surprise of all of us who had been stab braking in low range down mountains without a Jake for years. It was rapidly updated.

I'm avoiding CO as a plaque, taking 100+ mi "detour" through York, NE to go Dallas and back. Scariest back roads I've had pleasure to go through were in PA and WV. Well, yeah, there are many other places with nerve tinkering up/downs, but.. I'm glad I quit pulling a step board delivering to oil and other middle of nowhere construction fields.
