Sounds like a delicious proposition.

Abandoned lobster traps aren't as bad as abandoned gill nets.
Abandoned gill nets are a disaster to the world oceans and Great Lakes.4wayflashers and Boondock Thank this. -
any lobsters or any crab, or just about anything that "might be" in those traps, are most likely long dead.
also, over the years, they would have disintegrated to a point of no use for future trappingBoondock Thanks this. -
Well, 1 million traps divided by 20,000 removed each year is 50 years. Somebody looking for job security?

Seems to me that sending divers or somehow making the traps inoperable would be a lot easier than retrieving them. Either cutting them open or sealing them shut has to be easier than pulling them to the surface now that they no longer have lines connected to them. But yeah, interviewing the old timer lobstermen and mapping likely locations is a good start and ridiculous they haven’t already done this. It’s like they want to do it in the most expensive way possible, but we all know better than that.

Surprised this is an issue
Crab pots on the west coast have to have rot cords on them. The whole pot doesn't need to deteriorate for it to stop trapping critters, just the rot cordChinatown Thanks this.
