Desalination plants discharge a highly-concentrated brine back into the ocean. Environmentalists consider it a pollutant. You can't win with these people.

It's going to be a bad year. I had about a 30% reduction in my water allowance for rice. That means we planted about 35% less ground than last year. That's really pretty good considering some of the people with newer water rights or smaller allowances to begin with are losing more than 50%.
My water allowance for the almond trees will keep them alive for another year and that's about all it will do.

Where do you ship most of the almonds to? I know China is a big importer of almonds.

In Florida they're working on turning the brine into sodium hydroxide. For industrial usage.

Most of the almonds stay in the US. There are some exported overseas but that's under a marketing order that has all kinds of non-disclosure language in it.
The rice goes overseas. It's a shirt grain variety that makes good noodles.

Here in Iowa we use it to enhance the rust & corrosion process on our vehicles .. IDOT uses it faithfully all winter long
We also use it as a carrier when we spray 28% or 32% preplant for our corn fields

That's interesting. Arkansas also export rice to China and Georgia export chopsticks to China.
Easy to understand how a supply chain can be disrupted during conflict.
Pizza prices are going up because of sanctions on Russia and war in Ukraine. Both countries export wheat and corn to the USA.

Chinese bought almond orchards in California. Almonds are always in demand in China because giving almonds to guests or friends is a show of respect.
