I’m faced with the choice of a 2017 Pete 579 or a 2020 Mack Pinnacle at the moment. Right now, I’m leaning toward the Pete. Discuss.

Which engines are we speaking about? Who does your maintenance? If we’re talking automated transmissions, Volvo/Mack is smoother than Eaton…that alone may make the Mack the better choice.

If the Pete has been taken care of...I would choose it regardless of the motor. We had the 579's at Magnum with the Paccar motor and the only real issue I had with the one I had was the cam recall on the motor, and the ghost that would turn on the interior lights at random(which turned out to be condensation dripping down and getting into the back of the fixture, once sealed, the ghost was exorcized. That, and the layout of the interior left a lot of plastic covers where storage could have been, but as often as you are home, there would be plenty of storage to meet your needs.

Talk about insane. My fuel and routing is a joke. Picked up my FL load off the PA yard. The original routing and fuel solution took me down 83 into MD, thru Baltimore and partial fuel in Jessup, then thru DC and a fill in northern SC at the Love's. I checked and according to the Nag-A-Gator, it was 1 mile further to go down 81 to 77 to 26 to 95. So that is how I went. I got to the Love's at the NC/VA line and re-requested a fuel solution. It gave me a parial fill at the Love's here in Lambsburg, VA...then routed me all the way back up to 81 to 83 to 95 and fill in Jessup....WTF? 360 miles OOR to buy fuel at the T/A in Jessup. I had to look twice to make sure I didn't pull up the previous solution by mistake.

    omg...that's crazy.

I think fuel and routing solutions are a joke regardless of the company. I've never run out of fuel or been chastised for running a certain route at any of the companies that treated me like the experienced, adult driver that I am.

As long as I fueled at their authorized locations, called and asked for out of route permission to bypass a winter storm, and wasn't late for a pick up or delivery I was left alone to do my job the way I saw fit.

Mine was same way. Zerks wouldn’t take grease. I was almost done greasing so I smeared some on the legs. Better than nothing I guess. Will deal with it next time now that the weather has changed, if it ever stops raining.

Every time I think about going back to being a company driver (mostly for the insurance…I lose my wife’s coverage when our divorce is final in October), I read posts about fuel solutions.

I may still be better off paying over a grand out of pocket monthly then going back to the micromanagement.

The Mack has been in the shop frequently, but it has a 13 spd and an APU which needs repaired also. The other drawback is the cable operated clutch. It only has around 200k on the clock. The Pete is a Cummins with a 10 spd and has about 570k on the clock along with the EPU system.

I don’t have experience with the EPU, but otherwise that years Paccar treated me well, and a 10 spd should be bulletproof so I’d go the 579 route.
