I am looking at 2 trucks. Need input on best route to go. Both trucks have a overhaul with paperwork so just assume they are both in comparable condition.

    2003 379 6NZ Super 10spd 63” Standup Sleeper

    1989 379 3406b 18spd 63” Flat Top (frame off resto)

I am going to be running 48x102 flatbed mostly Southern to North Central US. I have a strong mechanical background and will do 90+% of my own maintenance.
    Thanks in advance!

I would go with the 03 with the 6nz.. and find a 13 or 15 sp and ditch the super 10.. that's just me
But I'am not a huge fan of the real early 379s myself

Go with that 3406b. Turn the pump up and hammer down

Super 10s were ok, when you got used to them.
Some, when button in right place on the side, auto shifted 9-10 drove one that didn’t but it’s just a flip and bump of pedal.
I’d probably go with 03 too, newer and gives more options if you do decide to lease to a company such as Mercer or LS.

I would go with the 1993. 6NZ is a good motor. Not to rain on your parade, but is this your first truck? I am assuming that it is, this is a really bad time to become an owner operator. I would hate for you to loose your shirt, the current conditions in the trucking industry are bad.

6NZ. I've always liked the Super 10's, but if running anywhere out west I'd go 13

The '89, mostly for resale, but once you drive it, that probably won't ever happen. I think the 379 and the Cat motor were the best Pete's ever.
