here, if you have a u-haul rental, you need a sign on the vehicle (both doors), signifying it is for hire. THEN you have to pull in.
as an example, when UPS or FedEx or Amazon rent trucks for the busy season, they have signage informing that they are for hire.Blue jeans, Another Canadian driver and InTooDeep Thank this. -
Depends on the state. South Dakota has signs directing rental trucks over 10000# to enter weigh stations.

Back in 2013, I and the family moved from Madison Wi., area to Midland TX. 2 large UHAUL’s both towing auto’s, took interstate as much as possible. Never pulled into any open scale.

I was told when I moved that if the sign indicates trucks, then you pull in. If the sign is labeled commercial vehicles, then you do not need to pull in.
I emailed the Indiana commercial enforcement section and they gave me this information.Blue jeans, nredfor88, D.Tibbitt and 3 others Thank this. -
You will have to stop at the agriculture checkpoint right over the border inside Florida…don’t forget.Blue jeans, D.Tibbitt and Another Canadian driver Thank this. -
in my state, pick up trucks and vans can be registered as "commercial" plated, but used for personal/private use, OR for commercial purposes.
some truck registrations are plated, "apportioned" for class 8 tractors, or even smaller trucks.
so it would "seem like" no matter what, you need to stop in Indiana.
here, there has to be a sign on the vehicle, informing it is for hire.
so, a traveler, or someone moving from east coast to say thru Indiana, is not going to know from, "trucks to commercial"Another Canadian driver Thanks this.
