So I have a Garmin Dezl GPS and it often sends me down insane routes, no truck routes, misses the only road in, drives me in literal circles, takes me off the highway just to get back on it. Yes I update the maps often.

Does anyone else's do things like this?

I am thinking about just getting a big iPad or Android tablet and getting an app. Anyone else go this route? Are there any apps that you recommend?

A GPS is not always correct, in fact it is frequently incorrect. Don't count of your GPS. Get your self a road atlas, and learn to use it.

I use the Hammer app,it's not always the best but it has a lot of good features.I got a Rand McNally truck atlas to double check the Hammer route sometimes.

My Garmin is pretty good most of the time. They all have stupid routing moments from time to time. Also the get off just to get on. Happened with my Garmin and a company provided one that I can’t remember the name of.

ok, so I will just pay more attention to it then when it tells me to get off the highway even though I have 5 more hours of I80.

I run two Garmin. They’ll give me 2 different routes. Usually not bad.
    Have trucker path on iPad.
    Have Hammer.
Sometimes I won’t like what any of them give me. They can all be goofy.
Do watch Garmin for final destination route. Darn thing will try to get you to drive around destination. As if you’re supposed to like the scenic route or something.
I like trucker path to look at satellite view of destination. Backtrack to look at path.
Hammer is fun to play with. It’s in beta stage.

One thing Garmin is extremely good at. Getting you through major spaghetti bowls in cities. It can be confusing. Garmin tells you the exact lane to be in. Makes it easy.
Just remember. They’re all goofy. They all have lacks.

Preview the entire route on the Garmin screen to sanity check it. My Garmin is notorious for sending me an exit too far and then tells me to double back to an exit I passed. Still love my Garmins tho

    What he said....

Also--check that the Garmin's final destination point is the EXACT SAME LOCATION as that given on Google Maps, and/or Trucker Path.

The software there is not perfect--you do need to double-check the "solution" it generates for you. You can use its other features to make corrections/changes, as appropriate.

Even with all that--I still like mine. It works great as a "copilot" while I'm driving, and keeps me from making other mistakes/wrong turns (assuming it has been programmed correctly, as described above).
