Key fob hacking: How thieves can hack into your car and tips to stop it

Good luck with mine. Even if they get the key they still gotta find both kill switches. And if they try without fliping the switches it locks out the computer so nothing shy of a replacment or the special obd2 tool i have can unlock it much less start it. Also pings my phone if someone tries to start it.

Additionally i keep nothing valuable in there unless im planning to use it. Even if someone robs it blind all they will get is about $150 worth of crap. Like lifeboat rations, some old tools for roadside repairs, a metal jerry can of water, a decent first aid kit and a few chemicals for the truck.

 

I’d be and am more worried to come back and see (hear) the cat cut off. Might be the only good reason to buy an electric car.

 

Insurance dude told me one time, "keep nothing in your car and never lock it. Because, if you keep nothing in it, there's nothing to loose. And if you don't lock it, they won't bust out a window just to find out that there's nothing to steal."

I keep nothing in my vehicle and I haven't locked it for years. I've been broken into twice, (based on all the crap in my glovebox being on the floor), but I've never had my window broken out and I never lost anything.
I'd say it's pretty good advice.

My problem is if they decide to trash the car as "revenge" for not leaving them good things then insurance would likely deny it for not locking the car. Hell ive had my side window smashed out and when they didnt find anything they vandalized the car to the tune of 18k. Insurances first question was "was the vehicle locked?"

Also as towards the CC getting stolen. I use a cat clamp, plate and i have a sensor that if either of those are removed or tampered with the car starts to howl and flash while also setting off onstar. Not that cat converter theft is common where i live. Last guy that tried to steal stuff around us came down with a sad case of lead based heart poisoning. It was pretty common in KC though and the clamp and plate saved my converted at least 3 times im aware of......yes i am THAT parinoid of an individual.

 

I’m assuming the lead poisoning was of the “hollow point” kind!

 

Wouldnt suprise me to be honest lol though the verson ive heard is it was 30-06 and the guy who had poisoning was a tweeker. The local farmers really really dont like outsiders coming in and screwing with their equipment.
