hey guys i have a rand mcnally gps 550. this is my 2nd one. and im having same issue. gps is plugged in and will be good with no issues. can be hours or even days and randomly it just shuts off and red dead battery symbol comes on. only way it turns back on is if i unplug charger (which makes no sense) any idea what i can do. i took my brothers garmin gps to see if it was an issue with my truck. it stayed on 3 weeks straight. mind you this is the 2nd rand mcnally brand new I tried with the same issue.

My advice would be to return your RM and purchase a Garmin. RM has terrible quality and even worse customer service.

I had that problem with every single model I had, from the 510, to the 730. You have to crush the usb connector a little for it to make a good connect.
That was a very well known issue.

My RM 740 started that a year or two ago. Make sure you are using the GPS powered through the mount, not trying to power the GPS via USB cable and the USB port. I limped along letting the GPS sit power off, not plugged into power for a few hours to a few days. Then often it would power on and work OK.

I found the battery model number for my RM740, bought a replacement battery from Palmdr.com ($25-30), watched a video on YouTUbe that shows how to replace the battery. You could buy the battery and bring your battery and GPS to most cell phone repair shops and they could replace the battery for a fee or do it yourself. I bet your GPS uses the same battery as the 530.

Palmdr.com can probably fix your 550 or you can buy a battery from them and do it yourself.
Make sure you disconnect your GPS from power when you take a 10 or 34. Nothing ruins batteries like being constantly charged.
