    Planning to move to Orlando, FL around August-September this year. The problem is, I have no idea what type of job I want or what company to go with. I’ve been driving OTR for the past 2 1/2 years with a great company that @Chinatown recommended. I would stay OTR but I’d like to actually use the overpriced apartment I’m going to be paying for with my fiancé. I have tanker/hazmat endorsements and a clean record. Would like to be home nightly. Maybe foodservice with Sysco or Mclane? I’ve just heard it’s hard on your body but great money….I’m only 26 but do I want that?

    I would greatly appreciate any inside info on any local companies or advice. Thank you!

    If you have the "creds", I'd go straight to Publix. Every food store is BEGGING for drivers( remember, the Safeway wagon being pulled by the CR England truck?) There is a Publix DC in Orlando, and a great company. Heck, screw the truck driving, dock workers have it made. Publix, and have a decent life with the best job security around, people may not buy new RVs, but boy howdy, they have to eat and Publix is one of the best.

    Publix was definitely on my list, just don’t know how well they pay dock workers. I know they hire drivers internally though. Thanks!

    I read, a Publix fork lift driver, that they are looking for, makes about $40,688/year, or 24% above average. A transport driver makes about $65 grand/year, about standard for most union drivers. Work the dock for a spell, these companies usually promote from within, and you could land that cushy transport job. I'm pretty sure, those drivers only touch the steering wheel, dolly handle and roll up door handle. I spent a lot of time in FL. almost moved there, and my GF at the time, a truck driver too, was going to go to Publix in Jax. They told her, being a woman, they would hire her on the spot.

    @picklerick.....

    Go tanker!!! :p:D

    Since you already have hazmat & tanker endorsements.....if you are also well versed with CDL world manual transmissions, then this opportunity could be a good one for you (and yes, it's home daily):

    Job Description - CDL Class A Driver Hazmat (43554) (taleo.net)

    It's MUCH EASIER WORK than food service, or local P&D--but similar money.

    Think about it.

    Why not look into the local freight companies like Southeastern, ODFL, ABF, XPO etc. Great pay and benefits and usually home every day.

    Sysco is constanlty hiring and firing - a ton of turnover - I had heard personal stories from several friends, and some family that this is NOT a great place to work. I could be wrong, and if youre looking for a job - by all means, give it a shot.
