Has anyone heard how many crashes have actually been caused by a collision mitigation system (CMS) because the sensor/radar picked up an overhead road sign and slammed on the truck’s brakes when another vehicle was following too closely?
While I understand the concept for using CMS, it still seems to have some flaws in the system. What do you think about CMS?

Potential flaws with the collision mitigation systems (CMS)

I took it off my truck because it nearly caused 3 major wrecks in a 2 month period. After it freaked out and hard locked my brakes on i80 in NE while it was snowing and no vehicle was within 1500 yards of me causeing me to almost jack knife...well i took it off my truck for a reason. Another "fun" one was i went into a scrap yard and it kept hard locking my truck because it read the scrap as me about to hit a vehicle. Had to actully unplug it then go to a dealer and pay them to clear the check engine lights that caused just to unlock my brakes.....and this 2 days after i paid the dealer to adjust and calabrate it.

I stopped using the cruise control with these newer trucks. I’m governered at 65 so I just keep the foot down when the speed limit allows it. Throttle pedal overrides the collision mitigation system.

My 2022 Volvo VNL760 was sent without the sensor thingy due to supply shortages. So, haven't had any issues with this in my current truck. My old truck, a 2019 VNL760 had this problem. But, it never slammed on the brakes so hard that it caused a potential accident. And, as mentioned by another,, if you don't use the cruise, it doesn't engage the automatic braking and use of the accelerator pedal overrides it also. So, with my Volvo at least it was only an occasional annoyance. I've heard that on Kneworths it can be a real problem, but I have no first hand experience with it.
In my opinion, it is one of those bean counter safety features that only looks good on paper and reports and charts. But, for the actual drivers, it is nothing but a potential disaster waiting to happen and has no place on a CMV.mjd4277, stuckinthemud, MACK E-6 and 1 other person Thank this. -

cycle through all the pages of the CMS and then turn cruise control on and off a few times and then turn cruise control on and set the speed. I don't remember the exact sequence of button pushes, so do every possible combination of CMS buttons and cruise-control on/off.Last edited: May 29, 2022

Mine displays false stationary object warnings up to five times per day. It brakes with cruise control on for vehicles that are leaving the road.
