I hope you dont mind me posting - I am doing so all the way from Manila Philippines. I am a "trucker wanna-be" LOL. Actually lost my job as call center manager last year after 24 yrs and was actually 2 days away from starting my training with Millis Transfer when I was offered a job here in Manila as a Director of a Call Center. I had my CDL permit and everything.

I have been facinsated with trucking for many years and actually have read every single page of this thread not only for the learning aspect but also it's actually entertaining. You all should have your own reality show on Discovery Channel. I became a fan of your JCT Drivers Page (hope that's ok) so I could see the pics you all post. Now just have to figure out who's who on FB vs. this site. I feel like I know Alan, LMB and Jarbo.....and I have never met any of you. Hell I even got excited when the new ones made the walk to pick out their trucks. I know that's crazy - but that's how much I have enjoyed reading the thread.

My plan is to finish my contract here (1 more year) and return to the US. Will be debt free, my sons are grown and on their own and I plan to fullfill my desires to drive and see the country. So If I may, I have a few questions - I am sure you have heard them before - but please offer your opinions and truth!

    1. Is 47 yrs old too old to get hired by a company as a driver these days?
    2. Can a guy my age start over out there and be accepted?
    3. What the hell is the "fuel surcharge" and how does that work?
    4. If you could be doing anything in the world - what would it be?

I will have to start with a crap company first to get my training and will not be able to work for a company like JCT initially - but thats ok too! I understand business very well from a P&L perspective and know how to cut costs to acheive those expectations, people management and numbers very well - so being an I/0 would be my ultimate desire one day.

Again - thanks for allowing me to "ride" along with each of you. You just dont know how much I have enjoyed it.

So-long from the Philippines for now and I hope I didnt intrude on your form but would love to keep riding along with you even from a distance if that's ok with you all?

    Jarbo Thanks this.

First of all of course its ok to post on here and in no way you're intruding on the forum. Now to your questions

    1. No 47 is not too old at all. There are ppl in their 60s to70s still driving a trk

    2. Yes since you have CDL there are plenty of companies that will take you on. If your plan is to eventually make the move to jct, I would recommend finding a reefer company (stevens, prime, marten, srt)

    3. Fuel surcharge is supposed to be a rate that the carrier charges the customer and given to you. Its calculated based on avg DOE(department of energy) price. Take that divided by 6 minus whatever the company caps the fuel cost at. With JCT we are capped at $1.30 give or take. Meaning if you get 6 mpg or better and fuel at the DOE price you won't pay more than $1.30 a gallon.

    4. Hmmm definately not trk driving lol. I mean if you have family and kids it sometimes puts a lil pressure on you. But in your case with no bills and kids all rown it would be a great job. Get paid to travel :)

    Jarbo Thanks this.

Free flow muffler... can that be put on any model? I've not heard of it.

I've been quiet... I know unusual... LOL. I've peeked in.... didn't have a lot to say. We're in NE currently... was in WA... got a load of apples in Chelan headed for Paul's Valley, OK... swapped with another driver in Snowville, UT as they needed to get to the JCT shop, so now we are headed to GA. So far we have managed to be inbetween storms... great to have nice clear skies and mild weather for a change.

3 weeks to our 3 month mark... so far so good. It seems everyone is concerned about the miles, but remember as Alan said... this is the slow time of year. I know we personally are not running as many as some of you guys, but we're doing good and happy. We figure it is going to pick up and be crazy in another month so we aren't worried. We haven't sat... we get a load pretty much right after or before we drop. We pretty much run 2 trips per week... hubby is solo driver for those of you reading that doesn't know this.

With our former company our settlements were always smaller than we expected... with JCT they have been larger than we expect... nothing wrong with that!:biggrin_255:
