Pay for all hours on duty - including fueling, loading/unloading, sitting in traffic, breakdowns, DOT Inspections....

I worked at an hourly w/OT place that had the time clock right next to a laptop with Peoplenet on it. Punch the clock, then log-in as on-duty on the laptop immediately thereafter. We were rated on our "efficiency," so it was of no long-term benefit to milk the clock. Once everyone was punched in, we had a quick safety meeting and then everyone got their shift work assignments and went out to the yard to log in to the truck, pre-trip and get on the road. If there was a problem, you took the truck around to the shop to get fixed, on-duty, not driving. Killed your efficiency for the shift, but if it was justified no harm would come from it. At the end of the shift, log out of the truck as on-duty and go back to the same time clock, finish and turn-in your paperwork, then log out as off-duty and punch out on the time clock. If you worked over your shift time, sign out on a clipboard with your off-duty time, so you wouldn't be scheduled for an immediate load at the start of the next shift, you still got your full 10 off.

Fast-forward 6 months, and the industry crashed. The efficiency numbers came into play as to who would stay working and who would be called off for the shift every night. My numbers weren't the best, as I had a lot of "shop time." The manager went to the shop manager to inquire about those with a lot of shop time to see if they were padding or if legit, and mine was 100% legit OOS issues or regen issues. Needless to say, I not only got to keep working, but I got promoted to the next higher division over it.

When I drove for Tankstar, that's the way we were paid.
Don't know if all terminals paid that way, but the Nashville terminal did. Also, paid for meal money if we turned in a receipt. Paid for 10 hr. breaks and 34 hr. restart.

Pay by hour removes one incentive to falsify logs. I was paid hourly for truck driving for 18 years. It's not a miracle cure. Your boss will watch your hours more carefully if each hour costs him money. Do the math to find out if it lowers wages and choose carefully what you agree to do.

So how much are they supposed to pay you for putting fuel in the truck? I bump the dock and go to sleep. Am I supposed to be compensated for sleepy-poo? Now sitting in traffic (especially when it's unavoidable) and breakdowns I can get down with.

Whether a driver gets paid hourly or the mileage, it's going to be based on whatever percentage each company allocates for payroll. For OTR drivers, I'm inclined to think it'll be a wash.

Considering I was getting, based on CPM $60/hr on mileage. I wouldn't want to take the cut in pay. LOL

I would rather stick to what I understand, which is cpm.
I know what to expect when it comes to shippers/receivers and fueling and all the other stuff.

What I would never understand is the round about way they might take to average out the hours I work vs. the straight mileage pay.
I have no doubt the bean counters would make it better for the company side.

Just like when our bonus structure changed a couple years ago.
They made it from very simple to very complicated, adding in new requirements.
My bonus pay is nowhere near what it used to be. Maybe 1/3 of what it was.
