Between a union gig or JB Hunt?

Can't beat the union health insurance for the driver and family.

What is Hunt offering that you can't get or is better than the Union gig?

The reasons I can see to not stick with the union gig are:
You do not like the union culture/work environment
You do not like the night shift (and there is no possibility of switching to days in the near future).
Longer term would be how recession proof is the company you are working for
Are you young enough to put in enough years to get pension benefits.

Assuming you can see yourself working union gigs long enough to get a pension, can tolerate the bureaucracy, and the work looks like it won't dry up in the next recession, Why would you want to go any other way?

 

I would go talk to the drivers at the union shop and ask that question, see what they have to say. Just because it's Teamsters (I'm assuming), you still might be on the hook for some medical premiums. How big is the operation and how good is the Local? How much is the union dues? Many drivers retiring soon? Talk to some J.B. drivers if you can also. If it was apples to apples I would say union job. (Edit added this) If you need to be home a couple days a week then I don't think anything OTR would work for you unless it's some sort of dedicated run, or maybe even regional.

 

Personally, I'm a Unionist. Although my current company isn't Union, my previous job, different occupation, was Union. I ended up holding about every position in my local they have except for Treasurer.
So, I recommend the Union gig!! Also, if you go that route, get involved with the Union as much as you can. It's a good way to be of service to your fellow employees.
