A truck I own was converted to hub pilot from budd before I bought it. Yesterday I needed to do some brake work and when I tore it down all 4 drives have budd rims on the inside and hp rims on the outside. The studs and nuts are hp and the hubs have the ridges to support the rims like a normal hp setup. I guess it’s ok, obviously it’s been this way for a while.
    Anyone seen this before?

    Never saw that before,
If the center of the inside wheel rim fits close on the hub I can see that working OK.

    They do fit nicely.
I can see machine marks like a lathe would leave in the pilot diameter.
I would say there pretty new rims and about bet there made on the same setup as the hp rims just drilled differently.
It seems to have worked fine for 50-60 percent of a set of tires or maybe more so I was thinking about leaving it alone at least until the next tire change

Never seen that. Can you post some pics of the "machine marks"?

Problem your gonna have is enough pinch pressure to keep the inside from slipping fore and aft in the holes. Doesn’t seem like much but after enough of it you could get a set studs to sheer. If it was mine I would look to be sure that the studs do not have any marks and go ahead and put hub pilot wheels on it. Just because it hasn’t happened yet does not mean it can’t or won’t

Stud pilots have a much larger lug diameter than a hub pilot. Sounds to me like they’re just, “sandwiched” in there. This may fall under, “don’t try this at home”.

Not quite following what your saying
The holes in the rim are larger but the inner stud on dual wheel axles is 3/4 and hp is 22mm or approximately 7/8
And yes there just sandwiched between the outer hp rim and the hub

Yes there definitely relying on being pinched and that kinda worried me but dad pointed out that it’s not much different than a regular hp rim…they don’t fit tight on the studs but fit tighter than the budds. I seem to remember that when I worked on school busses at a previous job they used standard truck hp wheels but had small studs 3/4 maybe but can’t remember. Whatever it was they had a ton of room and that was from the factory. But a school bus is quite a bit less stress with a Alison transmission and hydraulic brakes.
At this point there’s no smashed threads or indication that they’re moving back and forth on this truck but I don’t think it’s the best idea.

What your talking about used an oversized tapered nut that fit the big hole in the budd. If you notice a class 8 truck uses a large stud with a more narrow nut. Those machine marks your seeing I guarantee you are from that wheel rocking. Hub pilot uses like a 7/8 stud Budd holes are something close to 1-1/8. You have already decided it’s fine and not worth the trouble so do as you wish. I’m not saying I know It all or haven’t had to make do with less than adequate stuff a few times but this is begging for disaster. There is a line......with 4 used wheels and 4 tires dismount and remount we’re talking less than 500.00 bucks.

This is gonna hurt but it’s truth guys like you have no business working on their own trucks. Experience is one thing common sense is another.
