I have a good steer tire that got a small puncture in it so I put a plug as a temporary fix to get me to the drop off location two hours away. Will it hold if I cut the plug ends off flush in the inside and then patch the bottom? I’m only debating doing this because the tire is in really great condition.

I have had a steer patched before. I think the rule of thumb is not to patch it more than once.

    i supposed you could.

but every single company i ever worked for replaced the tire, with another new one. that tire, can be patched, then used on the trailer, or even the drives if the size is the same.

not too many people take chances on patched steers, they do too much work as it is.

Any plug you put in a steering tire makes it go to a tire shop and get a patch put on the inside of it and put on trailer or drive or just carry it for a spare.

Thanks to our current legal climate, you likely won't find a shop that will patch a steer tire. It used to done all the time before the lawyers got out of hand.

Yes but most shops will not put it back on steer. It will now have to be a spare, trailer, or drive tire for them to mess with it.

I just went through this with my local TA. Small nail center of tread and tire went flat. TA wouldn’t patch it and put it on so they ended up patching it for me to keep as a spare “drive tire”.
Not that I wanted to roll with a patched steer anyway. Unfortunately though, the tire only had 55k miles on it and the exact replacement was north of $1,400. That included the 30 mile trip to my storage yard for the road call repair.

I should have worded the title different. It should been should I patch a steer tire.I would be the one doing the patch and running it till tomorrow when the tire shops open up but in that time I can run anywhere from 2-3 more Frac sand loads. But needing opinions of people with experience with this kind of thing to see if it’s something that could potentially come undone or it’s not as bad as some people make it out to be.

Done right with an RMA approved drill and fill stem and patch technique in tread within 1/2 inch of shoulders and you will have no issues. For steers you don’t want more then 3 patches total and only one per 90degree quadrant.

    Weigh the profit vs risk.

Would you make enough on those loads to justify running it, the risk being blowout, whatever road scenario that may be, plus service truck or wrecker when it happens.
