Hello all. This is my first post, though I've been lurking for a few months. I farm and also haul manure for a custom manure applicator(both liquid in tanks and pen pack and litter in end dumps) here in Central Ohio. I'm looking at a `90 T800 with a 444xt Cummins in it. I've heard that they had their fair share of issues and problems. Engine was overhauled 75000 ago, but don't know total miles on it. Is it a good engine? Can it be turned up to say 475 horse with no ill effects? It'd mostly be used for short 5-20 mile hauls loaded, with possibly a few 100 mile trips. Mostly flat ground, won't need the power all the time, just would be nice to get up to speed on the big roads. I'm familiar with the Formula 350's and DD 60 Series and have gad good luck with both engines in the applications I'm using them for. The truck the 444 is in is sharp and fits what I need for a decent price. Thanks in advance.
Also the ad says the truck had 34K rears. Is that right? I've never seen 34's in a tandem, I think he might mean 38's. Just trying to get some questions answered before i call about it and posssibly waste a trip to Western Indiana to look at it.

First let me say welcome to the Forum, then to address the 444 Cummins, I have heard they have troubles but have never been around 1, how does it run now? I think it had something to do with coolant flow, but there could be other things. On the 34 k rears, I have seen that before, but most of the time they are rated heavier at 38 or 40 k. Do you put that much weight on them? If you do, it is worth considering it as a factor. I hope that someone with more experience with both issues steps up and adds to this.

This is from SOMEONE that Drove the 444 Cummions. First of all get rid of the Low Flow Coolant system. That right there will help you make that into a serious beast you will need a highflow Radiattor new water pump and a couple other parts. Second that engine can make Some Serious HORSEPOWER. The one I drove boss rebuilt it was the queen of the fleet 88 International with a 444 that on the dyno was making 720 TO THE GROUND when the DYNO BROKE. I still had more fuel and Turbo to feed the sucker when she let loose. I still had 150 lbs of rail pressure to go and 10 lbs of turbo pressure left. We are betting that she could have put 850-900 down. Last on the 444 do not drive it like a computer controlled moron motor they love their RPMS mine would lug at below 1400 so that was my shift point. Of course could have been my setup 444 13 double over with a .5 OD in the big hole and 3.73 rears on 24.5 Tall rubber.

No offense, but the truck your looking at is 20 years old! Unless everything has been rebuilt/replaced or rewired, it is still 20 years old.

Them Black Motors are from hell, coolant issues, head issues ,injector issues
junk fuel mileage.I think most of them are found in Freightliners,as with all trucks anything after 1987 is only a badge on the hood.
When they ran they ran good, most of the common issues were fixed after acouple of years.Cummins knew they would never catch up to that motor
    and dropped it.

I'm sure one could find something much newer for the same money, the Used lots are full and over flowing all over the US.

The 444 was a Big Cam series not a N-14 they were the LAST of the low flow cooling system one built.

I realize the truck is 20 years old, but I don't need anything fancy. I'm looking for something reliable with a mechanical big block engine and is long enough to bridge with a 34' dump trailer and has tall rubber. I haul on some nasty lanes pulling a dump bucket and tanker so the tall rubber is a must for clearance. Most of the newer trucks that are in my price range are too short with small block electronic engines and small rubber. Just my personal perferences/needs.
Thanks for the advice on the 444. I've been too busy to make a phone call the past couple days, but plan on calling seller by the end of the week. I know there is a guy an hour away from me that can really make a Cummins scream but haven't been up that way to talk to him since last fall.
