And how much cash you have to address the issues that will require repairs
If this one has emission stuff I’d find one that’s older than 2010 or whenever the pre emission rigs were .

And do they have maint receipts ?

I’m sure there are several threads in here with tips for buying used trucks .
All the stuff you need to have checked before you buy .

 

Judging from the pics, i mean pic, if you can get it under 50k, i'd be all over it....

 

1) I would get a Rig Dig Report (carfax for trucks)
2) Inspect frame for cracks and alignment - make sure it is not bent or twisted
3) Test Drive truck - Does it pull or drift to one side or the other
4.) Pay a certified mechanic to inspect truck and power train. Best $250 you will ever spend.

 

Just favor the other frame rail

 

If it was for $20k yes but anything higher, you have to look at it as a tool not a car.

Start with putting it on a dyno and getting a blowby reading - blowby measurements are ONLY DONE UNDER A LOAD, NOT SITTING IDLING.

Then pull the fluids for a complete oil analysis, engine (even if the oil has been changed), trans and axles.

Then get a complete ECM dump, not a summary but a complete one. Then look at the error codes and how the engine is configured.

Get the VIN checked by the dealer, they can pull the original order up. this will give you all the drive train info

Then get a mechanic to look at the truck, find all the problems he can find and you take those problems to a dealer and get estimates on getting them fixed. I subtract them from the asking price of the truck and that's your offer.

 

Have to agree here. It sounds excessive particularly if you are starting or don't have big money. But scabbing $500 at the start can lead to $5000+ easily first time out the gate with a job on.
