China: Man Wins $30 Million Lottery But Refuses To Tell His Family

I probably wouldn't tell mine, either. After all, money changes behavior, and I have already seen the vultures emerge any time a relative passes.

 

I'm the opposite. I'd want as many people as possible to know so that when all the people that treated me like crap come begging for money, I can tell them to **** off since they didn't think I was worth their time before I won the lottery.

One of the first things I'll ask them will be: "You never wanted to have anything to do with me before I won the lottery, am I finally worthy of your attention?"

 

Not just local/nearby Family, it's also distant Family and neighbors and friends of neighbors, and so on and so forth, since Name and Picture of Winner is usually Broadcast.
Then there are "those people" that the winner met ONCE somewhere, wanting "their share", so then one needs hire a Body Guard service, or so historical accounts validate.

 

Seems like a no brainer. Money has to go somewhere though, with nobody specified it would go to his family if he's still single.

I wonder, could he have the will designate that his money goes to a charity?

 

Even without being broadcast, in the US at least lottery winners are public information. So even in Chinatown's example, the guys sister could find out if she happened to look up winners on a lottery website. Wouldn't help her though if the guy didn't leave some way to contact him, which isn't hard. Move, new phone number, tell nobody where. New social media accounts or blocking the people you don't want seeing anything.

 

That is actually state-dependent. Some states still allow for anonymous winners, and all SHOULD allow for the practice.

I don't live in one of those states, therefore I would likely change my name afterward as another layer of separation.
