They fed me the same ol lines out here in PA. I was looking for a local job,they told me I was too many miles from their terminal. I then asked about regional and they told me they were not hiring but I could get in with the lease program. He didn't push the issue with me and I ended the phone call politely. What a scam they got goin'. Anybody that leases with these guys deserves what they get.

I thought after alot of years of drivers badmouthing JB HUNT and they stayed in buisness for many years that maybe i was missing something.
so after i parked my own truck,mainly because of high fuel costs and not so good rates, i took a job with the company ive been leased to for 8 years as a company driver. I was ok with it after i got used to a 65 mph truck then the bad news came that they (the company) was going to get rid of the solo driver divison and have everyone start running team. I decided that i couldnt nor did i want to run team (I dont even want to try sleeping in the bunk while running down most of these bumpy roads) so i quit and took a job with JB Hunt. after 6 months of their putting me in a 62 mph truck dispatching me like i had a large car rarley getting me home then putting pressure on me to lease-purchase one of their trucks (which i refused to do) they fired me when i put in a 2 week notice. i had found another job. i had delivered in Cincinatti Oh. so instead of accepting my notice told me to go over to Columbus OH. yard and give my dispatcher a call when i got there. So i did just that and when i called my dispatcher told me to clean out my truck and they would get me a bus ticket home.
(probably take it out of my pay) How was i going to get all my stuff (clothes,bedding,refrigerator,tv,and a bunch of other things on a bus? So i called my wife(we live in PA) to make the 225 mi drive to pick me up. well she couldnt do it because of her job so my 85 year old dad came after me. my first thought was to rent a car but it was Memorial day weekend so none of the rental car dealers had any cars to rent, so my dad made the journey to get me. My question is to the person who thinks JB HUNT is such a good company has he ever worked for any other co? or is he just not all together there? -
Wicked, I believe they have a terminal somewhere around Dallas as does a bunch of other companies and that's a little over 3 hours away from me. I saw a guy back in 06' right here in my home town in a day cab and was home every night. I told the recruiter this and he say's we've never had a local driver live that far away. I can even go talk to him and get his adress. Told him I really didn't care what it was doing as long as it's a company position but kept telling me all they had was lease in my area. He kept trying to force it to me but like I stated before kept asking him thing's that was blowing up in his face and he finally hung up on me with an attitude.
A good thing to keep in mind when getting ready to leave a company is leave all of your belonging's at home while on time off before putting in notice. It will be difficult if they continue to let you work the two week's instead of firing you but either way it will make life a lot easier when leaving because all you will have is you and your clothes. It's a good thing to do because you will end up getting stuck having to take a bus home and you can't put all that on a bus. What extra baggage you can get on the bus is going to cost an extra $10 a bag. -
the person who started this thread is obviously a new driver or something, seeing he/she thinks $850 a week is good money and JB Hunt is the place where everybody wants to drive. Been there, done that-I busted my butt on PPG Dedicated when I was over there and ran #### near 3000 miles a week and a barely brought home $850! I didnt know hardly anybody over there that made top pay, although I did meet a driver who was just celebrating his 23rd year with them and he was just getting top pay!
No thank you, I will stay with my $1100 a week(bring home after taxes, ins, ect) linehaul job and be home everyday. Non-Union BTW, and we are hiring people not letting them go like a lot of companies are. We have more work than we have drivers and we do very little advertising.
BTW, Skunk Truck- when I was OTR, I never traveled with more stuff than I had to in the truck, in fact I could clean my whole truck out and leave it spotless in 15 minutes or less(I did this on purpose), never know when something better will come along or when the place you work for now decides that you make enough. -
Worked for JB for 2 years. Living near Allentown PA, they have a deticated account, running for C&S wholesale. Delivering to local grocery stores, through out the mid-atlantic region in a day cab. Was averaging $1,000-$1,200 a week before taxes. Was home everyday, pay was .50pm plus $10 a stop and a daily salary of $60 dollars. 2008 I cleared $64,000. Pay was great, GREAT. But to work for that is a different story.
Great pay for 1500-1700 miles a week, but that was putting in 65-70 hours a week. 5-6 day work weeks. Now I did work an extra day every other weekend. Running in to NYC, (not Manhatten). They don't force you to drive in the snow, cause its up to you to drive, but they kind of pressure you.
They follow you with cameras tracking your moves, seeing of you have your seatbelt on, making sure you are keeping a safe distance, making sure your using your turn signals, and on and on. They monitor your truck to see if you have a what the call a "hard braking event." And if you do they question you on your reasoning, they write you up, put it on your company record (not your DAC report).
Like I said pay was great, but they are horrilbe to drive for. I was fired for a minor fender bender with a car, and receiving a ticket. Which is the policy. If you get a ticket as a result of an accident its an auto termination.
If it was not for that I would still be working for them. Complaining with everyone else, but putting up with that crap for a good pay check. -
Every Joe with a CDL wants to work at a place like that. You have about the same chance at winning big at a blackjack table as getting your foot in the door at a place like ABD or Old Dominion. -

I have almost 4 years safe driving experience anything from 2100 mile long haul to 5 mile local LTL. I have a doubles endorsment. Only thing I don't have is hazmat. yet still can't get on to a place like Conway or FedEx. The best I could do is a 12 dollar an hour gig driving a transit bus. -
JB Hunt is in the fore front. But it is being driven by people who don't really want to drive a truck. But see it as a means to an end.
JB was setting the pace for this. The other big players have been slow coming on board. But they are moving swiftly to respond in kind.
Let me point a few obscure things out for you.
With the onset of the HOS changes, aligned with the new CSA restrictions. It's more important than ever that drivers and companies stay on top of load/logistics.
You do this by either reducing the area a solo driver covers, or going all team. Solo drivers will spend more time relaying loads across the country between one another. Allowing them to be home most weekends.
Top pay/earnings is reserved for Union and OTR drivers, for the most part. It's not a hard and fast rule though...
And I could go on for great lengths in how this trickles down in effects on driver, companies, and rate of pay. But I won't unless you ask me too.
$850 a week, is a national average. And considered an excellent rate of pay in some areas...especially to the massive numbers that are flooding the industry for a paycheck of any size.
My current average is about $700 a week bring home, down from about $1000 +/- a week from a year or so ago. I'm also working less. And I live rather well on that amount. Hey ! I just bought a new carPayments not a problem.
While I agree a driver should be paid more for his efforts. I also agree the driver should be willing to consider the "benefits" of lesser paying jobs.
Average hourly pay in my area is $10 an hour...as a local driver.
I could do Conway at a higher rate...But why would I work that hard ?? Especially when the same opening appears 2-3 times a year, for 4 years in a row. Something smells at that job -
