Double coin tires

I just got a set of drives. We ran them in the past and they did good then the price went up a lot for some reason, can't remember if it was tariff or shipping, so we switched to Firestone 663s. Couldn't get Firestones now so told the salesman to get me these and I will try em again. I think I paid $3300 for this set and the last Firestones were $3550 back in april of this year. He told me some tires actually went down 5 percent this month due to ocean freight getting cheaper.

 

Price cannot be the determining factor when buying tires. YOUR life as well as everyone else around you depends on you tires Keep in mind that tire weigh rating is important to consider when purchasing tires as well as the number of ply.
I run Michelins on the truck and Yokohamas on my trailer when I don't run out the Michelins from the truck on the trailer. ALL are 16 ply. I probably run heavier than most, as I stay at 88,000lbs all the time.
Normally I only have to buy tires at about 18 months. With the cost of mounting almost doubling in the last year it make sense to also take in the cost of mounting new tires. Just some ideas.

 

I’d cross-shop Hankook, on Walmart, at ~$600 more. I feel like they have a lot more reputation to maintain, being a well-known tire brand, supplying some of the world’s largest manufacturers. Even then, I’d cross-shop legit tire dealers. You might be able to find them for a comparable price, at a nationwide chain, so you’ll have some kind of customer support.

 

Double coins are alright for what they are. Ive used them on my dump trailer before as thats what came on it and they held up okeyish. Not as good as ironmans or firestones though. Id never trust one as a steer tire but i would be alright putting them as a drive or drop axle tire if you cant afford or get better.

 

Hard to beat that price. I bought 4 Gladiator Brand Chinese drives from Walmart. Just over $1600 with tax. I shouldn’t have paid tax, but couldn’t get the exemption form set up, and was pressed for time. The Double Coins were a lot more. They’ve gotten expensive like everything else. Probably the most recognizable Chinese Brand name, and best reputation for manufacturing standards. All the Lugger drives are about the same anymore. The tread designs are all identical to Bridgestone. Best thing about Walmart is free shipping. I picked mine up at local store. Sometimes they’ll ship to doorstep for free. Depending on installation costs. If any. Might catch a deal at a TA or Petro on 8 mounted. Those days seem to be long gone.

 

I ran 8 double coins on my spread axle flatbed. They were the only tire I've ran in my short trucking career that lasted the abuse put onthe front axle on a spread. Plus running off-road a lot... never ran their drives before but the price of double coins is so high now . About the same as bridgestones

 

I bought a truck that came with brand new gladiators, all 8 drives. At 240k miles they still had a long way to go, but they started to wear horribly weird.

I bought 16 Bridgestone tires m713 on Walmart.com and was shipped 16 Chinese brand tires. Do you know how much of a pain it is to ship back 16 tires. Barcode on the labels wouldn’t read because of the tread and FedEx refused them and had to go to a huge FedEx center and this hell burned an entire day dealing with it.

 

Ive got a single steer double coin ive got nearly 30k miles on, its fine, rounded shoulder, would look into them if i was replacing trailer tires, but had all 8 new on those in june. Probably finally replace come spring

(Why is it a single on one side? Because im a cheap sob and had my pass side steer get a bolt in it and ive got to do my forward diffrrential stabilizer bars and an alignment before i put 2 new steers on, its causing some weird edge ribbon wear near the 50k mark)
