Just needs basic bobtail insurance. Nothing hard about getting that done.

 

If he’s leasing on to a carrier then all he needs is bobtail (non-trucking liability) insurance because once leased on he will be covered by the carrier’s liability policy.

 

1) Get Non trucking or bobtail insurance similar but different.
2) Get signed lease and a COI from the company he’s leasing onto.
3) Go to DMV for registration.

Title needs to be in his name. Company he’s leasing on to will provide proof of insurance that’s needed. Value replacement Ins. Collision, fire, theft is optional. Usually the Companies insurance company offers bobtail directly to O/Os, or the Company will refer you to another company they use. Or you can probably buy your own. Contact the company he’s leasing onto. They’ll have all the answers. More than happy to help. They do it all the time. They will make sure he’s legal, before sending him out. He’s going to need to pay the 2290 Highway use tax. To get a plate, Title in name, copy of paid HUT, proof of insurance, from leasing company. Possibly a copy of the actual lease. Often companies have a plate already from a previous Truck, and they’ll transfer it to your Truck. It’s best to get a plate in his own name if possible. Makes leaving and starting with a new company easier. Also keeps unscrupulous companies from overcharging for plates. Some will do that. Charging for the plate through a plate program using weekly deductions. The exception would be company paid plate. Some companies provide paid plate, even paid IFTA fuel taxes. The point being, if paying for a plate, best if it’s in his name, not the companies name. That’ll avoid getting screwed on the plate, if he leaves. Companies that insist on Lease Operator buying a plate in the company’s name should be avoided. Red flag for future dishonesty IMO.

 

Actually the FMCSA should require the plate be tied to the truck and its owner only, if a company wants to pay for it, that's alright but it is the truck and the company can not demand it back.

 

New one on me. I was Leased on for 7 yrs till 2003, to a Company who provided IRP Plate, IFTA, kYU, NYHUT, everything except HUT2290. Plate was theirs. They Owned it, and therefore kept it. I threw it away, but I’m sure they just got a lost replacement plate, and transferred it to another Truck. It used to be common practice. Maybe that’s changed.

 

YOU PAID FOR all of it. no matter what they say, YOU PAID for all of it.

 

Point being, the plate was in their name. They owned it. Pretty sure it’s still a common practice. The Company can provide almost anything, with or without a formal charge back. The exception is 2290. That has to be in the Truck owners name.
