Does this Connex have a FCC id # If so you can look it up on the FCC data base. That radio has good audio on transmit.

I am almost speechless now, I like what your saying KcOrey, but that means there are a lot of uneducated people out there. Everyone I talk to, and I mean everyone, says if I want to get more rx/tx I need more power period! I know I need a better antenna but no one has put the way you put it, 5/8ths wave? I've never even heard that term when it comes to CB's, not until now anyway. What about a Preditor 10k? and what coax do you suggest?
    Thanks

How does a CB'r get into the 10m band anyway? I mean if you buy a big radio and convert it to work as CB how can it be used in the 10m range unless you convert it back?
    Just curious

It is done either by expanding the channels of a standard CB (illegal) with a 'kit" or it is done by purchasing one of the so-called "10 Meter 'amateur' Radios". There is NOTHING "amateur" about it. These ILLEGAL radios with the "bands" of "channels" are then modified to include the CB freqs. This "accidently on purpose" leaves the original 10 Meter freqencies intact (this is NO accident, boys: everybody knows that militant CBers jist LOOOOVES dem "extree channels thar"!:biggrin_2552: So the CBers/truckers flip the "BAND" switch and find what they think is an 'empy' channel. THEN he gets a warning letter from FCC.:biggrin_25525:

I guess I will be the first to do as some say and follow the FCC rules!
Ok, so legally I can only run a max of 5v, I have that. I have a Cobra 29 NW WX ST and it is a pretty good radio, no tuning, straight out of the box using Freightliners wip antennas and factory coax. I can hear guys up to 6miles and talk with guys for up to a mile or two depending on the situation at the time, whether and terrain. KC said a 3db gain is like 10 times the power, ok how do I get a 3db gain? It was also stated by KC to use a 5/8ths wave antenna vs a 1/2 wave, that is totally new to me. I know about db's but not anough. I have a preditor 10k and Astatic 636L mc on the way. I plan on installing LM-250 or similar coax, getting my radio tuned and SWR set by a professional. Am I on the right track? I will put what is stated here to the test and keep all updated, if it works than I will be telling every trucker I know that they too can be legal. KC, you rock! Please let me know if I am on the right track, what you are saying is totally different than anything I have ever been told. Everyone says go bigger on the power. I understand where they are coming from, power is good! But, nontheless, illegal. I just want to be loud and clear when I talk and be able to carry on a conversastion with truckers up to 10, 15, or 20 miles away. If KC says it can be done than I will go legal.

Go for the amateur ticket if you want to "get out". Pure "power" is not what does the trick! One problem is, a CB radio is an obsolete technology, "stucK" right where it started in 1958. No flames, just a fact! Power is not the "do all, be all" of radio! If you want to talk to other trucking "hams" not only 20 miles away, but 40, 50, 75, 100 miles away like you are on your cellphone, look first at the Technician Amateur ticket at QRZ.com or ARRL.org. You can do it with a radio that will FIT IN YOUR SHIRT POCKET, has only 5-7 watts and THOUSANDS of what trucker/CBers know as "channels" (amateur radios do not have actual channels like CB). Operating thru a local "repeater" and using clear, reliable FM mode, you can make your old CB radio look so BAD, you'll wonder why you didn't go for the ticket sooner!!!! Operating thru something called "EchoLink", you can access "nodes" that will let you talk from sea to shining sea like a telephone. None of this "SCREEEEEEE, HOOOOOOOWL, ROOOOAAAARRR--BREAK, BREAK THAR, AH AIN'T GOT NO PANTIES ON" CRAP!!!!!!! If you are willing to trade the nonsense of CB radio for a bit more structure, maturity, and dignified conversations, then amateur radio is for you! The difference in the technology of Amateur vs. CB will ASTOUND you. It will make a CB radio look so foolish by comparison!!!! It's sure worth a look on the internet!!!!! :biggrin_25519:
