I'm looking at going with May but I still have a few questions after reading these boards.
    1. What is the amount that May charges you for going over alotted idle time?
    2. Do they pay / re-imburse for tolls?
    3. On that note do they use any passes? EZPass, KPass etc.
    4. Do they do a work-well test on new hires? (I'm out of shape)

Hey Skunkmonkey, I was just hired by May and can help a little,
The do charge for going over idle time however I am not sure the exact amount
the do use a pass setup for the scales and if your a 48state driver they have a pass program for east coast tolls. As far as west coast toll bridges, you pay out of pocket, get a reciept and include it in your transflo for reembursement.
There is no health type of exam you just have to be able to do the job. While at orientation I saw some pretty big boys in the driver lounge.
Overall a great company if you are willing to work, I mean really their truck that they are paying you to drive so I don't see what the gripe could be.
    Good Luck

Thanks for all the info Snakeskin. So how are you enjoying May? It's encouraging that most people seem happy there.

The only reason I wonder about the amount they charge for idle time is that it is REALLY hard to keep a low idle time when the company doesn't provide you with tools to help (APU, Opti-Idle, Idle-Air etc.) If they charge something like $3/hr you could easily end up paying hundreds of dollars a month even if you only idle when you sleep.

I try to keep my idling time low by rolling the window down or using a bunk heater but I find it impossible to sleep in 80 degree weather if I don't idle.

I hear ya Skunk, we do have bunk heaters and you can run a good sized fan if you get an inverter, You buy it and May installs it free. I dont mean to sound tuff but it is trucking and they do pay for the fuel to drive the truck so yes some adjustment is expected. Hundreds a month is IMO extreme. I have talked to a number of drivers and it really isnt that much of a big deal, and they pay you money when you dont exceed your idle time so it's fair. My trainner said he gets 40 to 50 extra every coulpe of weeks for not exceeding the time so I figure if you dont get crazy your not going to loose much. Also if it is to hot you can qualcomm your driver manager and get extra time for idle in extreme heat situations. I hope this helps.

That's nice that they let you use power inverters. I can't tell you how many times I wished I had a pure sine inverter on my truck. I'm glad to hear that my fear of owing the company hundreds of dollars a month is unwarranted. I'll have to give May a shot.

There ideal policy is as follows. 10% in the winter 30% in the summer. Anything over that they charger what ever the National Ave. fuel price is for each hour. So if the price is $2.80 then thats what you pay per hour. If it's $5 then thats what you pay.

And the idle times are being charged at stop lites, backing your trailer etc. When I worked there I did not idle at all for 1 week and still racked up around 3 percent.

In the summer in the southwest you will pay to idle or you will roast. They do have a idle override policy for excessive heat. but it is for 8 hrs and if they feel like giving it to you.

No driver should work for a company with a idle policy that does not have APU's. In these times it is required equiptment at any company who would be lucky enough to get me to drive their rig.

Hi BigBlue, I repect your confidence. There are alot of us however who are new and rightfully so less demanding by nature of that newness who are grateful just to have a job. I myself try to focus on all the good aspects of the career field and minimize the negative. I think of the days not to far gone when my Dad would get a motel room (all on his dime) due to extreme temps so he could get the rest he needed because he was a proffesional and knew he had to get the freight there, on time. Now I am not saying anyone who wont work in a truck without an apu or that has an idle policy isnt a proffesional. But lets consider the owner of the company, he is trying to stay afloat, fuel is his biggest expense, he has 900 trucks and he has asked his drivers to conserve but many dont so he is faced with a decision. Go out of biz and all those truckers and their families have no income or put in place an unpopular policy that at least keeps them employed and also gives them a way to directly control how much they make in idle bonus or debit, whatever the case. This is America and an owner of any company has the right to decide how his company runs and to try and make a profit. That amount of profit is decided by the laws of supply and demand not by those of us who work for them. Again, this is America and we as americans have the right to work for who ever we want to. So it seems to me that we americans can choose to be part of the solution and be grateful that we can provide for ourselves and our families (when so many cannot) or we can complain. Its a choice we all must make.
