Use to be, before the emission b.s. was added to engines, a lot of the trucks you'd see on the side of the road with their hood up had a yellow engine...after the emissions crap was added, they just leveled the playing field and made every manufacturer's engine as unreliable. Sure, CAT's pulled like a freight train(but so did my pre-emissions Cummins and Detroit), but you paid the price for that in fuel mileage and down time...f putting a CAT under the hood, I would prefer my old N-14 or Series 60.

I don’t know about an ISX but my N14 isn’t getting traded for anything else…

Well that's why, you have the last good red engine built not the isx that broke a lot of wallets

Technically “most” pre-emissions engine are decent, however, the last of the electronic Cats where the best, if you tuned them properly you could get more than enough horsepower out of them when driving correctly and still average decent mpg’s. Mine was getting 7 mpg all day. My ISX(Boat anchor) will get at best 5.5 but I have no choice thanks to this wonderful state “COMMIEFORNIA”…..

Edit; The SDP doesn’t count. That’s what put Cat out of business in Commiefornia.

If you can bear to drive the truck wrapped around it the DD16 has been relatively trouble free. Wouldn’t say it’s great on fuel but does do better than the isx it replaced

How many miles u got on the dd16 now? I hear a lot of good things about them from the guys that haul heavy weight. Which is encouraging for an emissions motor. They seem to all be junk. But I only ever ran isx and paccar

223060. It pulls great and the fuel isn’t horrible for what I do. Actually it’s pretty good 5.0 according to ifta. I had an 06 isx. It went to a million but it took a little help and only avg about 4.5 on fuel.
