Just curious if anyone else has had the same problem. I see trucks all the time doing it and usually I’m pretty good at using my jakes or brakes to not try and go more then 5 over. Yesterday I got pulled over by the local friendly sheriff in Oklahoma for doing 76 in a 70. Granted I was actively getting passed by several cars and was using the brakes as I passed the cop. All he did fortunately was check my license, insurance, registration and then just tell me slow it down and send me on my way.

6 over a lawyer can fight very easily. He already had you marked and he was on a fishing expedition and didn’t find anything else to ding you on. It’s the 15 overs that you might need to pay extra $$$ to the lawyer to get handled and maybe the 10 overs depending on where you’re at. (Virginia and Arkansas come to mind.)

I’m pretty sure it was sheriff and not a Smokey. Didn’t want to see my bills or anything. Just checked my license, insurance and cab card handed it back to me, told me to slow down and left.

They are all the same, no difference, they both can ruin your day.

Only if you let 'em... take local yokels, for instance, they'll definitely jump on a trucker for speeding through towns, as many small towns rely on speeding tickets for a significant portion of their revenue. Same goes for drunk driving... as long as you're not speeding or drunk, and not otherwise drawing attention to yourself, you're good to go. I learned early on to never speed through small towns, as those local yokels would certainly be lurking somewhere, waiting for their next "customer." Better to slow down and obey the speed limits... ease on through and hammer on it later.

I had a County Mountie flag me over one time as I was heading to Hannibal on US-36. He was parked on the shoulder, saw my placarded truck coming and waved his arms to flag me over... went through all my paperwork, walked around the truck, couldn't find anything wrong so he eventually let me go. Had I kept a sloppy logbook, I would've certainly received a ticket... same goes for the equipment. Of course, a DOT bear can always find something wrong with a truck if he looks hard enough, but a County Mountie isn't as well-trained to spot such violations. o_O

IMO, A full-grown bear is the most "dangerous" of the lot, particularly in the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement division, or whatever they call it nowadays... THAT cop is trained to spot violations and will certainly issue a citation, unless a driver is extremely persuasive and actually has a good reason or excuse, lol. No matter which kind of cop a trucker meets, it's best to remain calm and try to be polite, as there's no future in riling the badge. Otherwise, keep your log up to date, take care of your equipment, and don't do anything stupid where cops are likely to be lurking, lol.

Having said that, I'll tell ya that I once received a ticket for "5 over" in Kalifornia, up on I-5 in the San Joaquin Valley near a little town called Avenal. The only other traffic consisted of 4-wheelers blowing past me at 80 m.p.h., but the revenue-collecting cop who pulled me over knew the fine was double for a commercial vehicle, so he targeted my truck even though it was the slowest vehicle on the road. That cop also knew that a trucker was less likely to appear in court and contest a ticket... the trucker was much more likely to just fill out a money order and send it to the courthouse. :(

I also received a ticket one year for jumping into the #2 lane on the Grapevine to pass 2 heavily-loaded flatbeds "drag racing" up the grade... my wagon was empty and I was doing the limit, so I jumped into that #2 lane for all of 5 or 6 seconds as I blew past the flatbeds. Not another vehicle in sight, except for the cop hiding in the bushes as I blew past in the forbidden lane... sometimes a driver learns the hard way about these traps, and it wasn't my lucky day, so that one was on me. IIRC, the fine was $212, and I wasn't happy about it, but that was just the way it unfolded, so I simply took the ticket in silence.

They could yes. But it’s more likely the trooper would be versed in DOT refs as well

Personally, I think it's lazy policing - waiting at the bottom of a grade. I'd much rather see them in the flow of traffic, pulling out the distracted crowd.

76 in a 70 is nothing for Okies - odd that he pulled you when you were getting passed by traffic.

The cops mind: bigger dollar from the truck than from a car speeding
